All time ODI XI

Bolo.

International Captain
The early era stats are ****ed. David Gower is the 4th highest ever despite never being the #1 batsman in his own time. And he averaged 31 in ODIs. I reckon it's because of few ODIs being played outside WCs so a couple of good WC knocks would make you standout much more. The top 10 for bowlers is dominated by early era bowlers too. The rankings straight up suck especially when applied retrospectively.
I think the ICC rankings are really good, but they have some poor results, and the earlier ones are hot garbage.

My personal favourite is Keper Wessels (arguably the worst specialist I have seen with a decent length career) hitting the 20th highest ranking ever in 85 after a run that year of averaging 32 at a SR of 56.

Remembering players by what they could do rather than what they usually did is basically the #1 error we make as analysts IMO, especially if we try to go down the 'eyes not spreadsheets' route.
All Kapil votes for all rounder spot are also about what he could do.

Gayle's SR is shockingly average for his era given his reputation in t20s
Haha yeah Gayle is such a weirdo. Even in T20 he often tried be an anchor at the start of innings until he got bored. He basically tried to pretend he had a better technique than... Jack Leach. He did not.

Made it work anyway, but really could have been so much better - especially in ODIs.

Explosive ODI innings by Kapil: 175(138), 72(58), 89(63), 64(54), 58(31), 54(41), 72(38), 60(37), 75(51). These scores justify his ability. No one was playing such innings at that time. Plus I haven’t played mentioned so many times, Kapil played 33(16) or 40(25) innings in the lower order.

You don’t need to go in Super Saiyan mode every time someone talks negatively about Kapil . Kapil batting average warrants his criticism.

Hey I wanna be the hipster and pick Abbas.
I'll definitely allow it because you know I love Abbas, but you're still a hipster for it.

You also admitted the other day that you deliberately like to create teams that struggle to cobble together ten overs for the fifth bowler because that's what ODIs are to you. I smiled when I read it because like, I totally agree as a nerdy kid who was obsessed with the Mercantile Mutual Cup (Aus 50 overs domestic for those who don't know), but I think it may reveal your bias if you want to bat Dhoni at 7 and get 10 out of Watson/Sachin/Viv to fit Abbas in.

I’m just saying despite his average, there is enough evidence to show his ability as a great finisher. And just a great finisher, nothing else

I also feel there is enough evidence to bat him at 7 as a bowling all rounder. However if people differ from you , no need to worry.

You are mistaking me for someone else. I am actually the one who said Jayasuriya, Klusener and Watson are not good enough to be 5th bowler in my all time XI.
