If picking a Sri Lankan AT middle order most people would go Sangakkara-Jayawardene-Aravinda at 3-4-5. Who should be at 6 (judge on batting, not captaincy/bowling/fielding/keeping etc.)?

Mathews should be there as an 'all rounder'. After that it's between Arjuna and Samaraweera. Samaraweera is obviously the better bat but I might go with Arjuna given it's #6 or 7# and he can captain

Mathews is the better bat because he as a more rounded record than Sam. Sam however did win matches with the bat even on foreign conditions. Chandimal has to do bit more to go past him, but is lot more aggressive.

I'd say Mathews > Sam > Chandimal

Dilshan is bit of an enigma. He was ordinary down the order, but once he was promoted to opening was a different beast, averaging about 44-45.

I've posted this before about Mathews but SL will feel his absence when he calls it a day. We tend to look at him and think about what he could have achieved:
• A more rounded allrounder instead of the injury prone player who essentially gave up bowling.
• A batsman who could have averaged 50+ plus when he was in his prime.

He still played 100+ Tests and has a pretty darn good record.

If you consider ODIs

Ranatunga vs Mathews

Now Arjuna averages 36 compared to 42 of Mathews. But the sheer SR Arjuna played them and the quality of attacks he plays rates him comfortably above Mathews.

Despite averaging less once again Dilshan has played some quality innings especially later in his career.

lmao you already btfo on those charts
Actually it vindicates what fans feel about these players.

Out of above ODI players SL fans rate Dilshan and Arjuna at the highest, well above Mathews. The charts support it. And the good thing about charts is it carries minimum of bias.

It's pretty clearly Dilshan in ODIs. He's a great of the format while the others aren't. Arguably SL's best and he's being compared with randos (by ATG standards).

Nothing to do with the rankings though. They still suck.

Stop coming into threads about Tests and posting ODI ICC charts that no-one cares about, you psycho.
There's just no place for it in any serious discussion tbh. Like discussing the catalogues of great songwriters and bringing up the advertising jingles they wrote on the side.

Russel Arnold excluded for No Good Reason. For shame.

I'd happily watch a middle order that was just Aravinda and Russel.
