Not for me. Sangakkara’s home/away is seriously not good. Low average in Ind, South Africa, Wi and just abt average in Eng. Averages 60 in Aus, but only played 5 tests there only. Has scored truckload of runs against Bangladesh and Zim. Also scored many of his runs against a Pak attack, which barring Ajmal, was a joke. Plus played in one of the best eras of batting.
He's easily in the top 20.
When playing as a batsman (not keeping) he averaged:

77.28 in Australia
52.60 in England
48.20 in India
80.50 in NZ
60.00 in Pakistan
37.20 in South Africa
62.00 in the UAE
42.00 in the Windies

i don't like it when people remove his batting record as a keeper
it's not a given he would have batted the same if he was not keeping. He was a keeper mostly in the early part of his career while developing as a player. Those years cutting his teeth at international level are what helped make him a gun when he gave up the gloves. You don't have one without the other.

Even if you consider a selected portion of his career(like the above), his great average in Australia is built on the back of less than 5 matches. His record in SA is poor, vs WI is just abt decent. As I’ve said against Pak, only real threat was Ajmal(one of the poorest attacks they have ever had). So on basis on above, he has great records in NZ and Eng, and decent(not great) in Ind.

Now consider Kallis: Like Sanga, great player at home. Decent in Aus(based on a sample size more than three times the matches Sanga played in Aus, and Sanga played against one of the easiest Aus attacks, in 2007-08 especially). Great record in Pak and NZ like Sanga. Unlike him, great record in Ind, Wi as well. Less runs against Bangladesh(scored against Zim, but nothing like Sanga’s record vs Ban and even worse Pak than Kallis faced). Poor in Sr(based on only 5 tests tho), and poor in Eng(this I can’t dispute).

Again even against this selective sample of Sanga’s career, Kallis comes out better.

Him keeping to Murali, also taught him to figure out quality spin as well

Sanga on average faced much weaker attacks from most of the teams(especially Aus and Eng), and all of his peak came in one of the best eras of batting(to an extent even greater than Kallis).

D-did someone just rate Kallis above someone??

Kallis was one of the best test bats of his generation(though behind Lara, Tendulkar, Ponting and Waugh). But making a top 20 list for greatest batsmen without Kallis is justifiable.
Bradman, Tendulkar, Sobers, Viv, Hobbs, Lara, Smith, Hutton, Headley, Hammond, Gavaskar, Hammond, Sutcliffe, Border, Ponting, S Waugh, G Chappel, Pollock, Miandad, Barrington.
Nah replace one of the Hammonds with Kallis I reckon.

Oh something I’ve actually learnt on the forum (thanks for the reminder..) People will constantly use the same stat as an argument for or against different players, depending on how much they like them personally. Amuses or annoys me depending on the player.
