I love their stories ...Nathan Lyon was a groundsman , and after the magic of Warne and Macgill who could believe an off spinner would go on to take over 400 Test wickets it just doesn't happen...And Rangana Herath who works in a bank outside of test cricket...Spent a long time in the shadows of Murali ...By 30 he had only 36 Test wickets to his name ..He retired with over 400

I really rate Lyon, but Heath would have had a 600 wicket career if Murali didn't exist.

I think Herath is clearly a better bowler, but they're both fairly close stats wise. A bulk of Herath's work was done in Sri Lanka. He only played 15 Tests in Europe and Oceania and his numbers there aren't great. Lyon's performances in Asia are better. But Lyon also go to play there a lot more and had the opportunity to learn and adapt to the conditions. Herath unfortunately didn't have those chances.

If Maharaj was a Sri Lankan, he'd have produced Herath's numbers already.

I see both of them as in the same group...levels of excellence.
Obviously, Herath's thicker

Nah I disagree. Maharaj is quality, but Herath's bowling IQ was Elite, plus he developed a killer carrom ball towards the back end of his career.
Actually he was the first to ball the carom ball in modern times. Last time it was John Gleeson.
