South Africa team selection

The thing is that domestically he plays as a batting allrounder. I don't think we will see Mulder at 5 for SA right now. If he is stuck at 7,is he the guy to blast quick 20s and 30s?
I definitely would've said no before - I've made posts on here saying he should bat top 4 or at least 5 if he's gonna be in white ball teams, even ODIs - but he does seem to have improved that part of his game a lot in the past year. He's worth a go at #6 or #7 over the next couple of years IMO. If it doesn't work then Hulk still exists.

He still needs to get in before he is able to get into hitting mode. Your nr 7 needs to go from ball one. Currently only hulk is really able to do that in SA .

if an allrounder bats 5 or 6 than someone like ferreira can technically come in at 7

Again I don't care about winning in Aus (its not happening whoever we pick); I want to see progress on thinking here and the selection of squad is the single biggest litmus test... if they are not picking a fresh young squad at this stage I don't know.

If we had our new coach in place then it would be the perfect time for some fresh thinking around selections, but my fear is that with only an interim coach they're going to stick with the old guard. I can't remember if we've ever had an interim coach who was subsequently appointed, but if Maketa's not going to get the job then does he have any incentive to shake things up?

Apparently he is one of the frontrunners, so it could be that he's the man they want and they're getting a head start by appointing him as interim coach while they go through the process. If that's the case then maybe we'll see some changes, but I'm not holding my breath.

I`m hoping this is the case... but also while the coach has significant say on selection he is not the final arbitrator, that is the selection committee that is still going to be the same overall. They need to pick a youngish team to build and a coach that can help build a young team, Maketa could be a good coach for that.

But usually the coach is on the selection committee. Not sure about an interim coach but boucher had a vote.

If CSA phones you tomorrow and say: 'Stephen, you are the sole selector, please pick the squad,' who would be in your squad for the Aus tour?

Mulder and van Tonder for sure! No Rassie,Zondo or Erwee.
Not sure it's really fair to drop Erwee after not even playing Test cricket for a year. Think Rassie and Zondo will both tour, Mulder will probably be in the squad, not sure about Van Tonder.

(15) Elgar, J Malan, Markram, van Tonder, M. Ackerman, de Zorzi, Rickelton, Verryenne, Mulder, Jansen, Rabada, Maharaj/Harmer, Nortje, Coetzee, Ngidi

Petersen to still to come back in, J. Richards, N. Brand, Breetzke are ones I`m keeping my eye on. Still a big fan of Sipamla and Linde. Obviously Brevis and I`m a fan of Parsons as well.

If forced would pick Zondo over Bavuma at this stage. This would effectively be Elgars last chance to show something more before I replaced him with Maharaj as captain. Similar with Markram.

Lack of quality black batsmen is seriously going to hinder cricket and CSA... and picking players that aren't good enough is not the answer.

That's getting to be a serious problem, and it's not just black batsmen as it's not like there's huge numbers of coloured batsmen either. Quotas can't work if the two alternatives are half the team by necessity being white (meaning that white bowlers can't get much of a look in) or picking players not up to international standard.

I haven't seen much from de Zorzi when I've watched him play. Am I missing something?
He is a very good player, solid technique and ability... nothing exciting. But he deserves a shot, even if in two series time he gets dropped because selectors don't think he is good enough.

He doesn't even average 35 in FC, not sure he has the numbers to back up being in the Test side.

He had a decent FC series last year, let's see how he does this season.
