South Africa team selection

Bolo.

International Captain
Anyone knows why Linde is suddenly off the radar? All I remember is Maharaj coming in for a series and then Linde going out of fashion slowly

Ironic that Bavuma wasn't the reason that South Africa lost the last two games though after being so poor for long. Phehlukwayo also looked good a few years ago, not Jansen level good but still decent enough to be a handy 5th bowler. Why has he regressed this badly since Boucher came in?
I have thought Boucher was a **** for decades now, and was not happy about him getting a coaching job, but Andile's decline is not on Boucher.

Andile overperformed massively relative to his talent at the start if his career. He was always a bit of a hack, and every time he did well, it was genuinely surprising.

So I`m not gonna talk about the whole Bavuma thing because I think he has been put into an impossible position and coming off injury he was always gonna struggle in a format that is not his best... and we all know why he is being put in that position.

Looking at the entire squad in total I could understand exactly why they picked the players they picked, I understood the argument about Markram and Millers form and performance in the T20. I understand why they went for Rillee's experience. I understood why they picked Parnell who had showed good performances.

But in the end every time I looked at the SA squad and looked at the team sheet I had no confidence in the personal. Maybe this is a little harsh but it was like looking at a team of 'Duminys' talented capable players that can win you games but more often than not just don't perform and fail to do enough, particularly under pressure. And this for me is entirely about selection policy that continues to hold since 2015... SA needed to rebuild the team and talent 7 years ago now.

This mentality is the exact issue. You don't deserve anything, you earn it on the field.
Thing is though, I find South Africans dont like there players/captains/coaches say positive things at all. I remember back in the day with Smith, used to get flack a lot for daring to be positive. Places like MyBroadband and the dreaded comment section of Sports24

Him saying he felt his team deserved better is not a problem... effectively they did all the hard work in the tournament and took the eye of the ball. Stupid but **** happens. I am sure that the team put a lot of work in behind the scenes and feel bitterly disappointed.

But the other reality is working hard is not enough... particularly when you are meant to be operating at the top of your field.

Yes the whole 'low energy level" line is mystifying

Honestly I do think there is a bit of 'doth protest too much' on how close the group are and how everybody is pulling together etc... they seem to constantly telling how supportive everybody is of each other. And considering the broader circumstances and results it just seems unlikely.. or pure lip service.

And I think the low energy level is possibly indicative of this...

We also need to talk about Quinton De Kock..

The guy is absolutely hopeless in tournaments ! ...

In the ODI World Cup in 17 innings he averages 30.00 at a SR 85 with 0 hundreds
Compare that to his ODI career record - 45.57 , SR 96 - 17 ODI hundreds

In T20 World Cups he averages 24.12 @ 130.99 from 18 innings just 2 50's
T20 record overall he averages 32.18 from 76 innings @ 135 SR with 14 50's .

This WC he started well but then when we needed him the most he was nowhere ..
Last 3 innings vs India , Pakistan , Netherlands - 1, 0 , 13

I mean if you are supposed to the best bat , the opener ..The one you are counting on to be consistent it's not good enough...And with him retiring from Test cricket for the riches of T20 club cricket around the world... I really think he should go and do that on a permanent basis , I wouldn't have him in my team . I'd rather give the gloves to Stubbs .

Dwaine Pretorius was also a big miss , he was a capable batsman and he added some unpredictability to the SA batting line up, he seemed to be the only bowling all rounder the SA brains trust could even think of promoting up the order , which is what you need when you don't have a strong tail ...

The failed investment of Phehlukwayo and Wiaan Mulder has cost SA big time..

I've been extremely disappointed with Mulder's output with the bat whenever he's put on an SA shirt ...He hasn't scored a single 50 in SA colours despite doing well in county cricket and domestic cricket..

I think this thinking is the exact thinking that has created the problems in SA cricket in the last 5 years...

Hulk has doing nothing special enough to be considered anything but another jobbing cricketer and to think he is somehow going to may a difference to the SA team and or setup is sad. You complain about QDK (who quite clearly is one of the few truly gifted cricketers in the SA squad) and never ask why did he retire from Test cricket? You immediately make it about some sort of selfishness and greed by mentioning him playing different tournaments around the world like that is a bad thing. My opinion is he left the SA test environment because it is a toxic environment that he did not like. Your talk about a player like Mulder that in your opinion has failed but the reality is he has been treated like ****. He has been given an on and off occasional shot but never let to settle in the team. Compare him to someone like Green in Australia that did not start off with a bang... but was given game after game after game regardless. Sometimes it gives you Maxwell and M. Marsh and sometimes it gives you Green. But the support for the players is there. I see no support or honesty or real effort in SA cricket to identify manage and actually bring forward our most talented players. And this is partly because of the politics, but also because of the management and other players expecting their due.

I think it's best not to get personal and so defensive mate

I feel like we have this discussion often. @Everton Seymour , don't take it personally mate. @StephenZA been sharing these viewpoints for years,he is just passionate! :D

At the end of the day I feel like SA could have won this tournament. 100%! Because we have the talent. But we didn't give ourselves the best shot with the selections and the general nonsense that never seems to far away from the side.

I never once thought we would win this tournament, but it had nothing to do with the talent on the park. The end result of what happened has 100 % to do with internal and external leadership and man management.

SA has the talent, we can all see that. And the only weaknesses (on paper) this side had were TB at the top of the order and Parnell batting too high.

Overall, I thought the batting was solid and Nortje had a brilliant tournament, while Kesh and Lungi had ok ones.

KG is looking a bit flat, a month on a beach in Thailand, away from cricket, might be just what he needs.

Overall, we do have the talent, and in terms of T20, there seems to be a decentish pipeline, with Brevis, Ferreira, Coetzee, Roelofsen etc.

But these issues are deeper and something needs to give.

Interesting.

He flies under the radar does QDK.

Those world cup stats are poor, do you know if at least its runs against the supposed elite teams or it a lot of minnow bashing which makes them even more depressing.
