International Captain
Dempster
Donnelly
Crowe
Williamson
Conway
Dempster was successful in the few Tests he played but they were mostly against second string England teams. He played many years of county cricket and averaged 44, which while perfectly credible does not give the impression he could have maintained his Test record over a longer period. Nor does it suggest he was a superior player to KP. Also if you read contemporary 1930s articles, Dempster wasn't really considered one of the worlds elite openers, these would be Sutcliffe, Ponsford, Mitchell and at the end of the decade Hutton.

Crowe and Williamson probably are ahead of KP, Donnelly arguably about the same and Conway needs to play more before he can be compared with KP.

So NZ don't have 5 better players than KP.

There was a perception you can find in a few articles from the mid 90s on that Ambrose only turned up in favourable conditions. Quite a lot of his tests in 00 fit the bill.
Yeah, his wicket taking ability declined quite a bit. He was still very economical so he maintained a low average but his strike rate was quite high during his last 4-5 years.

Maybe that's why he doesn't seem to be rated as highly within the game as he is on here

Inzi also scored a ton against peak Ambrose as a youngster in WI in 93 and dominated Walsh/Ambrose in Pakistan in 97. His record against WI is a point in his favor.
Yeah but overall he failed in that series. And that series also featured a still quite capable Ian Bishop.

inzamam is who you want in a 4th innings chase

even over sachin tbh
Has Tendulkar ever been considered a particular benchmark for 4th innings chases? My recollection was always that he was often (sometimes unfairly) criticised for not producing as many great chasing knocks as a player of his greatness should have.

Nice to see you back, man. Hope all is well?

This is revisionism. Inzi was great against Ambrose and Walsh in WI. Nobody handled them with such disdain. He had a bad series against McGrath once. McGrath barely played in '05 if we're nitpicking. No Asian batsman except Tendulkar and Kohli has done well in SA.
Sorry I haven’t read after page 3 because I was too impatient to reply to this but McGrath played three out of five Tests in 05. KP scored three 50s plus 158, two of the 50s and the ton were against McGrath.

You're right but I did imply I was facetiously discounting it.
