Feel like Pietersen had the skill but not the basic technique to be in that company.

It is very difficult for fast scoring batsmen like KP, Sehwag, Gilly to average 50. These don't put a premium on their wickets in easy condition and their batting style isn't suited for tough wickets particularly at the end of their career which results in quick decline in their batting average.
Even Richards just averaged 50. And Devilliers got his average above 50 in last series iirc.

Tbf all those guys were the #1 bowler in ODIs for a decent length. Way less wacky than Gilly opening
