Australian Domestic Season 2022-23

Hunt would be the next in line from my POV but if Ward has another good season on the back of his dayboo last year, he'd be right in the mix. Hunt has to have the Adelaide discount applied to his runs to some extent. AO and Rolton are as flat as it gets for the most part.

I think the ship has sailed for Renshaw, and Street is also a Qlder so doesn't deserve it. Whiteman is a bit meh to me. He's a good player but doesn't really float my boat.

By contrast, this muscular, overtly masculine SA attack with Agar and McAndrew is the real deal.

Also, what a ****ing indictment NSW keep letting blokes like Ward go without getting a game but stick with consistent failures for season after season.

Weak end to a fine innings there from Ward

Good position here, although the prospect of a typical Jackson Bird troll innings still somewhat concerns me

As for the opening question, probably leaning towards Hunt at the moment, although it isn't like there is a clear standout candidate. Ward is promising but would still be probably a bit behind Hunt, similar story for Street (although I agree him not being picked for Queensland is dumb).

Harris is still Harris, would be a backwards move to return to him but he will (perhaps annoyingly) stay in the conversation if he keeps making domestic runs. Renshaw I wouldn't even remotely consider as an opener these days

What do you make of Whiteman? I think he's sneaky good. Probably never going to average 40+ in Tests over a long period which makes him a bit different to the other young hopefuls who might if they continue to improve, but I think there's a good chance he'd adapt to the higher quality of bowling really quickly. Seems kind of ideal to me as a short-term injury replacement. If Warner or Khawaja retired I'd probably look to one of the younger blokes but if I needed someone to fill in in an important Test I'd go with Whiteman.

Don't mind the idea tbh, as you say he probably wouldn't be the first choice for a long term place. But he is definitely a player who seems to know his own game well, could be a good option for a more temporary vacancy

Whiteman has something like 2400 runs @ 42 with 7 centuries since he started opening for WA in the shield and was MOTM in WA's shield final win last season. Think he should be second in the queue behind hunt but the selectors refuse to pick him in A squad's for whatever reason.

Lots of rumbling on Queensland scene

Renshaw opening while Street ignored

Impossible to keep both spinners happy

I'm not surprised. Some strange selection choices and when you've got 2 international spinners in your squad someone is going to have to miss out and it will be unfortunate

One player wasn’t picked for game 1 because he hadn’t bowled enough

Picked for game 2 despite not having bowled competitively since before game 1

Yeah their spinner selection was also.... weird. Picking swepson for the marsh cup fixtures at the start of the season when kunehmann was available was odd.

Odd? Swepson is the first choice spinner in all formats for Queensland. The only reason Kuhnemann ever played was Swepson being unavailable with the Aus squad

Swepson averages 52 in list-a cricket and goes at 6 an over after 38 games. Kunehmann has a far better record in the format and plays on the same grounds. He should be the first choice list-a spinner.

I don't rate Swepson and think Kuhnemann should be the first choice in all formats, but that's not relevant. I'm just pointing out that Swepson is the 1st choice Queensland spinner so it's not odd that he was picked ahead of Kuhnemann.

Don’t shoot the messenger

I was told that Kuhnemann was going to get the nod & Swepson wasn’t happy

However, Swepson got called into Oz setup & things calmed down

Will be interesting to see what happens today

This is very interesting but doesn't surprise me at all. Swepson has been in the Aus squads without playing much cricket for the best part of a year and I can imagine he'd be livid if he comes back and doesn't even get into the Queensland XI.

Kuhnemann should get the nod IMO. Don't know why Aus selectors are so enamoured with Swepson tbh

Yeah he's pretty ordinary across all formats at international level tbh. Can only think it's the traditional Australian selector leg spin boner.
