Nick Pope playing his way out of contention.
You'd hope so. I can almost cope with his poor distribution, but he's got to hold onto that one. Ramsdale's the better bet as Pickford's understudy, isn't he? But the overall performance was better tonight, and they must benefit from actually scoring a few goals. I do have a lot of sympathy for Southgate about how few of his players maintain their form for more than a season or two. So many of them seem to be, at best, slightly out of sorts, or at worst, not even starting for their club side. For all the pundits' talk about Maguire regaining his confidence before the WC, I don't really see how that can happen if he's not starting for Man Utd. That should also be true for Shaw, but we did look better not having Saka playing out of position, so maybe that's how it will have to be at left back. As for Maguire, I don't know who should play instead of him on the left of a back three. Maybe Guehi? My lad reckons Tomori, but I know nothing whatsoever about him. Oh, and Saka looked way better than Sterling. And Bellingham looks really good in both of these games, so there's a plus.

The people on social media who slag off Pickford need to give their heads a wobble. He isn't great but he has never let us down in an England shirt and never made the mistakes he has for Everton in an England match.

Meh, he's fantastic week in, week out for Newcastle, as he was for Burnley. Can't say that for Pickford at his club.

He's the better keeper, but unfortunately people will remember that mistake.

Take a punt on Ben White as a one of three CBs?

Got to take your chance when it comes. He hasn't but Pickford has. Pickford will be number 1 in Qatar of that there is no doubt. I worry about our defence though as none of them are any good.

Is Fikayo Tomori any use? Starts every game for the Italian champions. Unless he's a very noticeable weak link it's strange that he can't even make a squad.

Lots of ways they could go at CB but they surely can't start Maguire. He was pretty good for them but that was when he was also pretty good at club level. Right now he's dreadful.

Is the alternative to Shaw just Chilwell? Meh.

Well I presumed Tomori would get a chance so we could find out but he didn't. Our full backs/wing backs in Qatar will be James, Trippier, Shaw and Chilwell. Bet Trent is left out of squad.

For better and worse Southgate puts a lot more stock in performances for him than club form. And on that basis Pickford is rightly his number one. I tend to think it’s a good approach because you’re building a team not a collection of individuals but at the same time he goes too far with it eg Maguire - always good for England in the past but his malaise is everywhere now.

Would have Chilwell over Shaw any day tbh
I agree that Chilwell is better, especially if they're playing with wing backs. It's just that he's played like ten games in two years and nobody really knows where he'll be at in November.

If Chilwell is comfortably better for the next six weeks and he still goes with Shaw I'll call it a mistake. But Shaw's been very good for England before and Chilwell hasn't really. Right now it's one of those where either decision is fine.

Yeah, I guess so, I just generally don't really rate Shaw at all. I'd probably even pick Saka over Shaw tbh, again especially if they play with wingbacks, even though he's been arse at leftback the last few times he's appeared there.

Shaw has had some good years and some bad years. He's been poor this past year but we'll see where he is in November.

Re: Saka, I'm not really a fan of makeshift wing backs because so much of playing there is positioning. Some of the best players there have been guys like Doherty and Alonso with remarkably limited physical and technical ability. Tbf that's also a good case for Chilwell over Shaw. But Shaw makes more sense than Saka, who might be more useful elsewhere anyway.
