On a similar note to Bevan, Darren Lehmann is another one. Barely got the chance to play Tests for most of his peak career but his on-and-off appearances still managed to net him an average of 45.

Both these guys could easily have replaced Damien Martyn or Mark Waugh's careers with just as good, probably even better results

No the point is he played short bowling perfectly well in ODIs. It's not like they bowled 1 bouncer an over, he struggled with it, but it was ok because there were 5 other balls that he made it up on. He had a fantastic pull shot and never had an issue with short bowling at that level.

Is this definitely true? It's been a long time but I don't remember Bevan playing crisp pulls and stuff much. Looked kinda ungainly yet still effective at not getting out on the onside from memory

Doesn't matter if Bevan was weak against the short ball. Failed in more opportunities than successful players from his era got. Not robbed by selectors, robbed by having the most stacked set of compatriates ever. Would have played 150+ tests for England after his start with the same selectors, and ended up averaging 49.97. With a margin for error of +- 0.02 runs. This is England we are talking about

It's true. It was tiresome too because every time he'd get a short ball, dispatch it to the boundary, the commentators would say something like "oh it doesn't look like he's having any trouble with the short ball here durrrrr"

Wasn't even the end of his Test career - came back a couple of years later for a few Tests. Kept a FC average over 40 so can be considered unlucky given the standards now.

Average of 40 in the county championship back then was pretty ordinary by international standards

Nearly every Aussie state cricketer that went over there would come back having averaged 50-70 for the winter and they weren't international regulars
