*Official* New Zealand in Australia 2022

Mark Waugh knows what it's like to lose form drastically

Bloke fell off a cliff out of nowhere around 2002
Thought he’d been short of runs for a good year before he was dropped from the test side.

IIRC Shane Bond and co did bring his limited overs career to a sudden end.

He had a great 2001 Ashes series and then the very next home summer he was done, seemed like out of nowhere

Congrats to Finch for signing off with a high, at least on the captaincy front. Thought Australia were way below their best in the first 2 games (mainly with the bat) and still found ways to win - full credit for closing things out well. Smith in particular showed again he’s a master of slow wicket batting.

Didn't watch live but seems like green had a good game. Never thought of him as somoene who could walk to the wicket and slap it like that from ball one, usually very nervy starter who needs 20 balls before he can hit them anywhere. Good to see phillips and allen amongst the runs, crazy that both of them were warming the best the whole series.

Going forward, think the XI should be
1.Head/Mcdermott
2.Warner
3.Smith
4.Green
5.Marsh
6.Carey
7.Maxwell

Anyone know where mcdermott has ****ed off to after that pakistan tour? Wasn't in the squad after the 100 there and they called in inglis before him, which feels weird since ODI's are his worst format.

australia clearly the better team this series. kinda faultless performance
They were 5 for under 50 in 2 games lol

It's apparent that he definitely can, but he just usually doesn't. He really looks like he can do anything

Yup Green’s an excellent addition to the lineup one year before a WC. Good enough to bat in the top 5 if needed and on the evidence of this series can rescue or close things off as needed. Far better than Stoinis for sure.

The most positive thing I can say for NZ is they looked a better balanced side when they finally decided to drop Bracewell (not intended to make him a scapegoat for a terrible series, but he really shouldn’t be taking up space in the XI when you have Allen and Phillips on the bench).

is Williamson finished? he played proper Test Knocks in two straight ODIs and after getting set got out to a literal full toss and then runout.

Like Neesh every now and then plays these innings that remind you there’s a better batsman in him than what he tends to show.
tbf to Santner batting at eight in ODI cricket doesn’t really give you much of a chance a lot of the time. I’m still of the believe that Neesham should play @ 6 and Santner @ 7 with New Zealand looking at playing a bowing all rounder type @ 8. Someone like Rippon, Nathan Smith, or Kyle Jamieson.

I really don’t think we’ll go anywhere with just 3 bowlers, plus Santner and having to make up 10 overs from Neesham and whoever else.

Who’s the kiwi radio bloke who’s been around for decades? My god that bloke has a chip on his shoulder the size of Mt Rushmore
no need for the score with wadds on comms. You can always tell how NZ’s doing by how annoyed he is about people in the crowd enjoying themselves.

On form, does KW deserve to be in the xi? Obvz NZ aren’t going to drop him and fair enough, he’s one of the top 2 batsmen the country’s ever produced. but that innings played a huge roll in the side’s defeat. It was kinda sad how much NZ’s fortune’s improved after he got out.

Who would come in for him, realistically? Guppy is horribly out of form aswell, and Bracewell isnt a number 3's arsehole. Maybe Chapman?

If Young hadn't been somewhat run into the ground I'd say him. Tbh I think Conway would be better at 3, with Ravindra and Allen opening. Gives us an extra bowling option too.

Alternatively bump Phillips up, or give Mitchell a chance to steer a game.

Could have something like:
1. Allen
2. Ravindra
3. Conway
4. Mitchell
5. Phillips
6. Neesham
7. Cleaver/Fletcher

or

1. Allen
2. Conway
3. Mitchell
4. Phillips
5. Chapman
6. Neesham
7. Cleaver/Fletcher

or

1. Allen
2. Conway
3. Phillips
4. Young
5. Mitchell
6. Neesham
7. Cleaver/Fletcher

Firstly, well done to Australia. Able to pick almost a full XI of guys who contribute and play a very clear role, and perform it more often than not. Hopefully we watch the innings' that Steve Smith, Carey, Green etc played and learn something from the way they're so clear about how they score runs, which areas to access etc. The clarity that you have to have in your game to score a hundred like Smith's, to know exactly how many fielders are where etc is pretty special. And their balance of pace, RH/LHers, spin etc is also enviable.

As for us, the honeymoon is now truly over. The warm glow from the WTC final, making 50-over + T20 finals, I'd say is gone certainly in us hardcore fans but also in the general public who can't cop us blowing losing positions to Australia.

If Gary Stead is any good, he'll need to prove his coaching chops from now, after arguably (I would) inheriting a great side and steadily turning it into a worse one, without having lost much personnel apart from Ross Taylor.

As for Kane, I think it's crazy talk to even consider dropping him, as awful as he was in this series. The trouble with him is that when he's out of form, he looks to battle and grind his way out rather than smack his way out. And it's worked in the past, but not v Australia.

We've got plenty of ODIs coming up after the World T20, with India, Pakistan, India again, Sri Lanka, Pakistan again, Bangladesh and England in the next 12 months ahead of the World Cup. That's 23 ODIs in 12 months, and I think we played something like 9 in the 2 years after COVID. Time to head back to the drawing board and decide how we're going to get better.

Ps. How good to have a 50-over series again. 51 pages of thread and counting, a series that will be remembered for many years, rather than a junk throwaway T20 cash grab. Proper skills exhibited, ebbs and flows, proper cricket. Loved it. I bloody well hope 50-over cricket is not dead, just because gormless national administators say so.
