This must be the first time since the very early stages of his career that Guptill has been left out of the starting XI in white ball (though I’m sure he’s been ‘rested’ a few timesalong the way).

Testament to what a fantastic player he’s been but also how he’s fallen from his usual standards in recent times.

O’Keefe trying to engage Smith in some actual analysis. Smith self-importantly thought it was a World Cup Final reference and then absolutely panicked and changed the subject when he realised Kerry was expecting him to have something insightful to say.

Smithy sounding tetchy and uptight. Competitive bloke, proud Kiwi, must be getting sick of the chokes and meek capitulations.

Already, Finn looks proactive and willing to impart himself on the game. Hazelwood drops one slightly short and whilst it didn't go where he wanted to, at least his pull showed he's taking the game on. Gup would've blocked it back to the bowler. Looking a bit shaky on 5th stump, mind you

Who’s realistically next in line to skipper NZ? Latham?

i just wonder whether KW should have a spell from it and just bat. Worked for Root.

He looks like he’s got the weight of thee world on his shoulders
Yeah it's definitely Latham, I've seen him captain well in the past but as Moss said, his Test captaincy last summer was far from hot.

Will Young might've been an outside shout but we've absolutely butchered his talent, so far.

He’ll hopefully be opening against Aus in that World T20 opener. Offers both parties a chance to learn something about the other, but a useful preview for him if he can make it count.

We’ve had 2 games of Brad Haddin thinking a 2016 JAMODI was a 2015 World Cup game he played in, and now Smith thinks that same 2015 game was a semi-final, despite commentating both games ?‍♂

I can't see a world in which this can't/shouldn't happen.

As I say, he's proactively looking to score here - and it almost feels like it's freed Conway up as a result. I'm prepared to think the latter might be a coincidence, but it certainly hasn't hurt.

Almost sounds like a reflection of Australia-NZ fixtures in the last decade. One side cares a bit too much, the other too little?

I can only offer the viewpoint that I've been on radio in studio, and when the big red 'live' button goes, your brain does some incredibly insane things. I've listened back to things that in no way represented things I wanted to say or believed at all, or even resembled English. Smithy has no excuse (apart from red wine) but commentary is hard.

Meanwhile over in India the home side has declared at 229/6 after a lot of rain/play lost. NZ A are 38/1. Carter out, Ravindra and Cleaver (batsnan only) at the crease.

This is almost like watching... a young Martin Guptill. But with a better pull shot. Motto used to be 'I dunno I just see ball hit ball' and that's exactly how Allen is playing.

... not that there's anything wrong with growing into more of an anchor role; NZ just need to not open with every anchor in the shop.
