Where will Steve Smith end up being ranked?

Smith has only played grand total of 2 games in NZ! It’s amazing how few games smaller teams get these days.

CW ranked him at #10. Think he will only go higher, not lower.

This top 10 looks perfect. Smith has not yet overtaken the top 9.

I reckon he can maintain that average of 60+ if he focuses solely on tests ala Jimmy and retires from the other two formats after the World Cups

He's a guy I can imagine playing for a long time too. Maybe I'm being harsh on him but I can't imagine he has a lot going on in his life other than cricket

I have been often fascinated by how long an ATG player’s peak usually last. Have looked at Sachin, Lara, Sanga, Kallis, Ponting, Dravid etc.

Magic number is between 36-37 at max. Afterwards things start going completely downhill.

There's never been a clear "number 2" batsman after Bradman, in these ATG discussions. If Smith keeps up at a similar rate for the remainder of his career, or even drops off slightly, I think he'll be in this conversation with Hobbs, Sobers, Lara, Viv, Tendulkar, etc.

So probably top 5-10, but remember this is actually a lot better than it seems at first glance due to the lack of consensus on the top dogs of the tier under Bradman.

Iirc Ponting averaged 58 or something after playing 100 tests. Smith is averaging 60 with 87 games. So, there isn’t much of a difference.

What I am saying is what he has accomplished isn’t unprecedented..
Ponting also played in an extremely batting friendly era, tbh. Part of what has made smith so special was his utter dominance coinciding with one of the most unfriendly 5 year batting period's post war between 2015 and 2020.

Smith too has played on some of the flattest wickets known to man. It’s only in last 5 years, conditions have become tougher.
