Where will Steve Smith end up being ranked?

Smith is still averaging 60 plus, though it is clear he is past his peak. He is 33 and maybe have at least three years left if not more.

Where will he end up as an all-time bat? Top ten? Top five? Top three? Best since Bradman?

Impossible to tell. He certainly has a chance to end up as 2nd best Australian batsman. Or he can fell off the cliff and may end up with Ponting/ Chappell etc.

Both scenarios are equally likely.

Unless he has a Kohli meltdown, he should still up end ahead of those two, no?

Iirc Ponting averaged 58 or something after playing 100 tests. Smith is averaging 60 with 87 games. So, there isn’t much of a difference.

What I am saying is what he has accomplished isn’t unprecedented..

Although I admit Smith did it against better bowling/ tougher conditions in certain series compared to Ponting..

Yeah that is fair. I dunno, for some reason, I hesitate to put Smith up there with the Tendulkars and Laras.

He could be just as good as them (or might even better). Issue is he won’t play as many games that we expect from a modern day batsman. He missed games due to sand paper, cancelled SA tour, and in general teams not playing as many tests as in the past.

If he gets to 120 tests somehow, that would be a good number IMO.

I note that every posted in this thread so far has discounted a very realistic scenario when it comes to Smith, and that is that he scores 5439 runs between now and his retirement without being dismissed, thus becoming the number one test bastman ever with an average of 100.

I'm backing him in.

CW ranked him at #10. Think he will only go higher, not lower.

Smith should end up in the top 5 with Bradman, Hobbs, Sobers, and Tendulkar.
