Can't watch but that's an awful batting card, even if it's a slow turning wicket.

Odd that our two best bowlers in Boult and Ferguson have gone for runs while the rest haven't - off-target or just unlucky?

Can anyone explain to me why Neesham hasn’t played an ODI in 18 months and yet they don’t pick him for any of 5 so far on this tour
Doesn't make sense to me, if anything he's more valuable in ODI cricket because his bowling can be useful on non-roads (as in last world cup) whereas a bit too risky in T20s.

There's a few other odd things going on in our side. Where's Henry? Been incumbent over Southee in ODIs, but blink and Southee is back there in his place.

Also agree with other posters that in both LO formats, there's a few too many potentially good players often sitting on the sidelines while time ticks on. Allen is one, Chapman perennially misses out too, even after that fifty in India after which I thought he'd be a fixture. Phillips needs to play the majority of games too. Guptill will need to be moved on fairly soon to make space, though will probably make the t20 WC. Sears another that needs game time and the management of Rippon has been bizarre.

Henry is injured and has come home

Since the last year or so it's the batting that's often let us down. Kane will obviously score plenty of runs in future but his nicking off must be a concern. He's getting out quite regularly after looking like he can't do a thing wrong.

We rely so much in Conway.

Can't expect Allen to score every game the way he bats. He's one of those batters that'll win a game with the bat once in say 4-5 games.

Bracewell continues to impress though. A good no 6/no 7. Can't expect him to take wickets but does bowl tight at least so far.

Guptill may be in his twilight but then deserves to call it off when he likes. Pretty sure Gary and Larsen can't wait to get rid of him. Having read Taylor's book that seems like a theme as you hit mid 30s, rightly or wrongly.

haven't reached this bit yet but i agree with the selectors if this is the case, assuming you're not performing. we need to play the best 11 in the big games.

Don't want to take away your thrill of reading through the book but you'll be surprised how ruthless Gary and Larsen were to Taylor despite him being a legend. Don't think it was reserved just for him.

OTOH, Windies can be happy that we're fielding pretty close to our first choice XI right now and they're winning comfortably.

If they wanted him to retire from tests after the WTC final then I agree. Ideally he got the home summer trundle against the Dutch for us to say goodbye and protected his test statistics.

You surely would have read past the bit where Taylor was told off by Victoria for not performing and the doubts about being able to keep his spot for the WTC finals creeping in. Taylor's thoughts about Gary and Ronchi prior to the WTC finals. His question to Kane if he was going to be dropped for WTC finals if he didn't perform vs England. Tells you no matter who you are and how much cricket you'd have played, the pressure to perform never lets you off the hook. Guptill must be going through the same now.

speaking of which, interesting that he put his edgbaston 80 in his top 5 innings.

That's the way it should be. I don't feel sorry for people that are millionaires and have had 15 year international careers. It's more ruthless of the selectors to leave out performing players that have been grinding away in domestic cricket and don't have either of those things.

I don't get why Kane even on this surface wouldn't bowl out Santner and Bracewell. Either he relies on Southee and Trent or doesn't rate our spinners. Probably both. He did that in the last t20 as well

But then these guys have also done their bit for years and deserve a longer rope. Despite the millions they want to win games for nz. They can just move on but then they try to give it everything even at that stage of their careers.

There's two schools of thought on that. Wayne Bennett was a massive one for putting the team ahead of the player, and felt you had to be ruthless sometimes with guys who might have 'earned' the right to go on a bit longer but were taking a spot of someone who could contribute more or build experience/both.

I felt that way with Ross, although he vindicated the position with his knock in the WTC final. I felt he was holding Will Young out of the 4 spot (which he never took, but should've) but Young wouldn't have done what Ross did in that 4th innings.
