also for all the wrist-slitting the NZ fans love to do, they're the only unbeaten team in this Super League cycle so far.
could have done with leading on technicalities like this in our last odi vs england.

australia and india in succession are going to break this team and i am here for it. Fire Gary Stead, Gavin Larsen and Shane Jurgenson.

I'm sure everyone's see the news already, but SA have conceded their Super League points to Australia because they'd rather play a domestic T20 comp than 3 ODIs:

risking missing qualifying for the world cup like this is disgusting. im starting to resign myself to the corpoghouls finally getting what they want and t20 being the only format in 20-30 years.

And by not going ahead with the T20 competition they risk not being able to stay afloat and missing the World Cup that way.

OK, that's probably a bit of an exaggeration as I don't think their finances are that bad, but they aren't great and this isn't a cash grab by a greedy board. Instead it was a difficult decision made by one who desperately need the money just to operate.

They can boss the qualifiers for teams outside the top 8 and still make it through, right?

Are the CSA accounts available to the public? I find it hard to believe they are actually losing money. Must be some serious mismanagement going on. I know they've lost a lot of sponsors due to the controversies the board went through recently, so my gut feeling is there are a ton of bloated expenses/wages that were built around that income that they have not been able to cut down.

Also wasn't part of the issue they had with the old board was that some of the members were abusing their access to the CSA funds? Using CSA money on personal spending or First Class flights and other **** like that.

Yeah I don't think it's that big a deal. There's no guarantee they would have won that series in Aus anyway. Probably a decent chance it could have been a 3-0 whitewash and then they are in the same position anyway.

There may have been some mismanagement of funds, but revenue dropping by 50% is going to be a setback far beyond that. And the narrative has always been that the only incoming tours they make any sort of money on are India, England, and Australia, so they're never really flush with cash.

Yeah, potentially losing the 3-0 series isn't a reason to cancel, but everyone claiming that South Africa are jeopardising their chances at qualifying by not playing the series are assuming that they would come away with points and that's by no means a given. And in the event that they do have to play the qualifiers, if they're not good enough to make it through those then it's unlikely that they'd put up any sort of showing at the World Cup.

ok fair enough, but its extremely frustrating cricket is at this point when some boards have huge money....and just want to play franchise gimmick trash for all the money rather than cricket.

it's like they looked at Rugby League and how irrelevant it is outside NSW, Queensland, South Auckland and probably some equally isolated joint in England and said "yes, that is the stuff, that is what we want to be."

The West Indies are the first 'nation' to complete their 24 matches, and currently sit precariously at 8th place. Remember only the Top 8 teams get direct entry to the 'main' World Cup, so whether or not WI have to play in the qualifiers depends on how Sri Lanka (3 games vs NZ away in March) and Ireland (3 games vs BD at home, dates TBC) go in their final rounds of matches.

The points table does not yet reflect South Africa's 3-0 forfeit to Australia, so they're actually worse off than they look. With 5 games left in hand, SA could still theoretically finish on 109 points, which would be enough to overtake the West Indies, Ireland (max 98) and SL (max 107), gaining them direct entry into the World Cup! All five of these games are meant to be played at home as well - 2 ODIs at home vs the Netherlands in March (from a series called off in Nov/Dec 2021 due to COVID), and 3 ODIs vs England TBC. The England series will be tough to take points from, even with home advantage, so they'll be hoping for other results to go their way.

Zimbabwe and Netherlands are officially eliminated, and will play in the World Cup Qualifiers. Joining them will be three out of WI/SL/Ireland/SA, and 5 other Associate Nations. What are these 5 Associate teams you ask?

Well, three of these teams are determined by the ongoing ICC Cricket World Cup League 2, the standings of which are as follows:

So how this works is that every team plays every other six(!) times - twice at home, twice away and twice at a neutral venue. This is a result of the fact that every tournament in the WCL2 has to be a tri-series. Kinda cool tbh. I presume it's driven by budget/logistical restraints. Oman and USA are the first two nations here to complete their quota of 36 matches. With 10 games in hand, the UAE still have a mathematical chance of making the top 3, but they'll also need Namibia to lose all of their remaining matches and then it's still down to NRR. So we can safely assume that Scotland, Oman and Namibia will take 3 of the spots at the World Cup Qualifiers later this year.

The remaining two spots will be between USA, UAE, Nepal, PNG, Canada and Jersey - the latter two entering the conversation by virtue of finishing first place in their respective World Cup Challenge League groups. These six nations will play in the ICC Cricket World Cup Qualifier Play-off, which is scheduled for March/April 2023, but the structure/location/etc have yet to be announced.

Bangladesh have had a surprisingly good run during this Super League phase, and right now ODI cricket seems to be their strongest format. Indian conditions should suit them well, and the core of the squad seems relatively stable:

Openers: Tamim, Liton (c) (+), Anamul, Shanto
Middle Order: Mushy (+), Mahmadullah, Afif, Mossadek, Nurul (+)
Allrounders: Shakib, Mehidy, Saifuddin
Pacers: Taskin, Mustafizur, Shoriful, Hasan, Ebadot
Spinners: Taijul, Nasum

We do need a better backup opening option - Anamul and Shanto haven't impressed, and we've tried Soumya as well. This World Cup could be a final hurrah for the core of Shakib, Mushy, Tamim and Mahmadullah as well, so they'll be motivated to put on a strong showing. There's a decent little pace battery being built up lately, and Nasum has emerged as a decent backup spin option as well. Nurul should get more chances moving forward, decent player IMO.

The England series is confirmed . It's 27 Jan, 29 Jan and 1 Feb. They take a small from SA20 , play those 3 games then straight back to SA20.
