Lets not get ahead of ourselves. Brilliant from macewell today but this is still Ireland in a JAMODI. All credit to him though, fantastic knock. If he can keep this up against higher level teams, he's on that flight to india for sure next year. I'm guessing he probably already had made the t20 squad for aus wc this year, based on how much stead and co believe in him.
Fair enough but I was watching live and didn't think Bracewell could have got out for days. Barely missed a ball.. sure edged a couple but generally chanceless. It's still a very long way for the WCs, Ireland played exactly like a first class side in NZ. They responded the way a first class local team would as well so not getting carried away by this but for someone like Bracewell that has just been found he's not a bowler and is going for 6s in test cricket this is quite an up shot. Even if you scripted you couldn't have come up with a scenario like this. No I'm not suggesting he will be able to pull this off vs Aus, India, Eng or any of those top billed sides.

That said given how brittle is our top order (how many time are we 3-4 down before anything) of late a case for someone like Bracewell as a batter in place of Nicholls can be made. Batting at 5 or 6 and providing that ability to hit the ball long and hard. Maybe not bowling but a good enough white ball batter and a very good fielder. Obviously keep him away from test cricket please.

In a way quite happy it didn't end in an embarrassment but at the same time now the series' vs Ireland (are they ranked no.11?), dutch etc is starting to become well fought series' That is truly disturbing. No not that they shouldn't play well or show fight but it's us that keep on struggling, day in day out. It's turning out to be like every game is a struggle no matter whom we are playing.

Hey so neesham wasn't picked for the odi's here cuzzz? Chances for macewell, rippon?

May be a indication that he isn't in the odi wc plans for next year, being in the subc and all...

Lockie bowled well, with pace and swung the ball early. Henry was reasonable at the start, usual stuff bowling back of the length and moving the ball tad away. Last couple of spells from Henry weren't great. Lockie bowled all right in the death but Ireland tail could still find gaps at will. Bracewell got away bowling at a time when Ireland were consolidating and Latham took him off rightly so as soon as he went for a 12 run last of his overs. Sodhi with his new action bowled less shorter than I have ever seen but seems to have lost the ability to beat the batters in the air. Need to be seen. Phillips was all right but didn't look like a bowler and looked good enough for 3-4 overs. Tickener I have no idea what he was trying to bowl. He bowled both sides of the wicket, all lengths and generally pretty pedestrian.

Guptill, no way near his best. Yes he did play some signature over the top straight drive but generally struggled. Scoreboard won't tell you that. Couple of bad calls for singles, a mistimed pull going over wicket keeper, beaten good number of times, spinners had him in a knot, Singh dropped him when on 40 or something but you can understand he has been on a 10 week break from cricket so probably just getting his timing going probably. I'd be really really surprised if Guptill can hang around for another year + and not so sure if the spin friendly tracks in India would be to his liking.

Allen, the biggest problem for him is how does he handle this urge to not having a swipe consistently. The lad just doesn't seem to understand you can still score fours on the ground and can hit a big one every now and then which he is more than capable of. As soon as he dots up few balls he goes for a hoick. I really want him to do well but he is not going to be given a long rope and should make good use of this opportunity.

Young at times finds ways to get out, there was absolutely no need to dance down the track and defend. Looked kind of out of sorts from ball one, beaten, edging to open account etc... High time he just trusts his technique and not try and be funky like Darryl Mitchell.

Latham, looked absoutely fine. Was timing the ball well, getting into good position and scoring at good clip while Guptill at the other end was trying hard to lay bat on ball. But then Latham does Latham, missed a full toss on stumps.

Nicholls came and went, struck in the crease looked as ugly as they come and nicked off to the keeper in no time.

Glenn Phillips played some glorious cut shots, got dropped playing a pull (Wish he had other shots than just pull at anything short of good length) and in general struggled to rotate strike vs spin. Gave a really good hand to Bracewell and built what was a very important partnership. A long way away from being able to play spin, rotate vs spin consistently.

Ish Sodhi was outstanding, soaked in the pressure, ticked along nicely, rotated the strike far better than some of the top order and smashed a couple of the last over of Singh. Just about the time we had to accelerate.

Henry missed more than he hit. Lockie played sensibly and did his very best till he was castled by a good ball. To be fair it was not up to these guys to bat and win games.

Bracewell did all the good things that others did and avoided all the bad things that others did. He was way above the rest of the squad. Obviously he was well fed in areas he could score mostly leg side. 90 of his 127 runs came from the leg side. Don't think there would have been a single four on the off side. The ground was small and his timing was immaculate. All in all a Bracewell's day. I'm sure he will push Nicholls out of the squad.

He may well push neesh out too, could macewell. Also, is seifert done? Scored a hundy for sessex in t20 recently....surprised he didn't get a callup, he was NZC's pet project for a while there.

I wonder when he qualifies for an updated cricinfo profile photo. 2008 u19 world cup photo that one, as a 17 year old. Very cute. But 14 years have passed ...
Edit. Or maybe it is from the 2010 tournament?

Didn't manage to watch but caught highlights of the first innings - that looks like a fun match. Classy innings from Tector (THE ProTECTOR?). Looks like our bowling went as you'd predict - Ferguson ?, Henry good early & bad later, Tickner pumped, Sodhi meh with a couple of meh wickets (great catch by Macewell though).

Congrats to Macewell on the match-winning innings. Don't mind giving him, Phillips and preferably Chapman too a run in ODIs as the batsmen who bowl part-time spin, to see who be useful in the India ODI WC. Macewell can develop an innings and can biff, though I think he'll come up short when faced with bowlers of real quality like you do in a world cup. He already visibly struggled against the pace of a new Duke ball at 135km/h bowled by someone zippy like Potts, and would expect him to have a very hard time against quality spin too. He's welcome to prove me wrong though.

Want serious runs from Allen and Young next match.

It's clearly worked for Allen at every other level, but there's not anyone successful in world cricket whose approach to biffing is so indiscriminate. Wait, I just remembered Colin De Grandhomme exists... ok one other, but he bowls, and does occasionally surprise with a different approach. Allen needs an approach that extends beyond Just Have A Hoick. I'm sure our coaches will be able to shape him into the batsman he should become .

Young has been successful in Bangladesh T20s and India iirc with using his feet and being proactive. Haven't seen his dismissal yet but imo he should keep doing that, and getting feet moving may push him into some form. Agree that at the moment, he just finds ways to get out.

Nicholls only ODI role imo should be as a stopgap opener again if we don't have any better options.

Macewell definitely a welcome option in a tricky batting position for us, just please stop bowling him 10 overs. Please. He's a batsman, let him bat.

Sodhi almost runs in like a medium pacer. Bit odd. Time will tell if it works.

Guptill looked....not good tbh. Despite taking advantage of short boundaries and a less powerful attack than some he still struggled. Phillips had a fend at some really wide stuff too which he should not be doing now tbh. Tickner wasn't great either, grunting in effort to send it down short and wide at 138kph. Despite the jailbreak there are a lot of things to work on for the team.

Lol at Campher getting out of there with Ireland's best figures. I didn't see the end of the game but he was by far their least reliable bowler, golden arm aside. McBrine had a strong game. Their spin options shape them up well for the World Cup, but despite scoring 300 they still feel light on batting. If Dockrell isn't going to bowl then sub him for a specialist batsman maybe? McBrine and Singh seem reliable.
