Having Astle and McMillan getting handy wickets helped in that era too. When things were a struggle it meant the main bowlers wouldn't be over bowled too much (still got injured though).

Chris Harris of all people had a pretty decent series too. Don't think he did much in test cricket other than that.
England also had a revival of sorts after this series in reaction to th criticism for losing it. The good performances in subcontinent followed under Hussain when no one gave them a chance.

Location is irrelevant unless you think winning games at Leeds with 4+ bowlers is impossible. It'll never make sense no matter where you go unless the side has given up on winning.

I think they’ll stick with Young on the basis that it’s the subcontinent so they may get away with a non-regular opener there. Though Shaheen and co should have something to say about it.

No I got your point, but in the end it's a stupid decision since there is no real balance between runs and wickets that justifies this selection. Location is irrelevant in that there is no place in the world where it's justified to go in with 3 regular bowlers. Sides might be bowled out quickly by less bowlers but in general 3 is still too little to have if you want to win Tests. We don't need explanations from coaches to know that a dumb selection is dumb.
