Such a great series win. Butcher was right too, that side didn't get the respect they deserved. I remember the Wisden editor at the time Matthew Engel wrote they were the most boring team in world cricket before the series. It was so satisfying to see Cairns, Astle, Nash and Vettori really step up.
I remember the journalist for I think the Telegraph was absolutely scathing about the NZ team during that series. His meltdown after NZ ran through England on day 4 at the Oval was just *chef’s kiss*.

Coming back from covid, trying to prevent a whitewash in a series where almost everything has gone wrong.
A consolation 100 in a dead rubber won't change the fact KW is nothing more than an ordinary Test batsman in English conditions since you mentioned greatness.

Matt Horne somehow made a century in one of those games where it looked like every other ball you could Nick off. Nzl had a few of those guys who were forgettable but made such contributions in memorable wins.

Having Astle and McMillan getting handy wickets helped in that era too. When things were a struggle it meant the main bowlers wouldn't be over bowled too much (still got injured though).

If Young gets the chop after being put in a job outside his experience (because he is a good player and the specialists in domestic cricket have been average there) and not being truly awful at it then that is a mistake of the management rather than an indictment on the player.

Fire Gary Stead and Gavin Larsen.

Still available on cricinfo:

It is not true to say that England have the worst cricket team in the world. Even in their current state of disrepair, they would beat the Faroe Islands and give the Costa Ricans a run for their dollars, though there are worrying reports of strapping all-rounders emerging from Patagonia, and Greenland, on their ice pitches, would represent a mighty challenge.

NZC may fire Larsen but not Stead. His contract runs through till one day WC in India next year. Live with it for another year.

That said the captains have to take some blame too. They're hand in glove with these decisions.

I kinda hope the top 4 leave everything to Mitchell and Blundell again so there's no last minute dead rubber runs to hide behind, because you know the people who manage this side will do that.

That's right, I remember visiting Lord's and being slightly surprised to see Horne's name on the Honours board. One of the unsung heroes. Even Matt Bell chimed in with some useful runs. The pinnacle of the Rixon era.

I know what you're saying, but surely the law of averages has to catch up with Mitchell and Blundell and we could end up losing by 8 wickets before the end of today.

Maybe that loss would spur the required changes.

Not to sound like a talk back caller, but a team who consistently throw away strong positions needs leadership to push through. We don't have it.
