My personal theory is that they've binge watched 'Botham's Ashes', seen everyone else prodding around against Alderman and Lillee before Beefy came in to smash those hundreds at Headingley and Old Trafford, and concluded that's the way the game should be played.

Bit of a mercy for NZ that it's stumps and they still have a lead. Though it looks like their problems with the old ball are now not limited to how to take wickets, but also how to react to opposition batsmen on the rampage. Of course they haven't helped themselves with the bowling selection for this test.

I reckon McCullum’s whole identity is in opposition to the piece of conventional wisdom that says there are good and bad ways to get out. Stokes’s dismissal being not just bad, but irresponsible, reckless, proof that he’s a trash human for not doing his duty and nicking a length ball to the keeper.

Wagner reviewed first ball against Overton one that clearly pitched miles outside leg, it was a straight ball that didn't swing so never a chance it pitched in line. And then, probably because he didn't want to waste two reviews in such quick time, didn't review one two overs later that was a classic left armer's lbw, swinging to land on middle-and-leg and going on to hit leg. Didn't think it would be this costly, but it summed up the tour in some ways. (Doesn't excuse the umpire for getting it wrong, if it's smashing leg stump it should be given...)

Generously paying back England for not reviewing the lbw which would have gotten Mitchell out early yesterday.

It shows you can't afford mistakes against batsmen of that quality though. Mitchell basically undismissible for less than 100 this series and Jamie Overton never yet dismissed in Test cricket.

Tbf to the umpire, Wagner didn’t make much of an appeal, I think he might’ve thought the batsman inside edged it.
