First round of domestic contracts announced today.

Otago:

Otago Volts Contracts (2021/22)

First Round

  1. Matt BACON
  2. Max CHU
  3. Jacob CUMMING*
  4. Jacob DUFFY
  5. Dean FOXCOFT
  6. Jake GIBSON
  7. Andrew HAZELDINE*
  8. Ben LOCKROSE*
  9. Jarrod MCKAY
  10. Travis MULLER
  11. Dale PHILLIPS
  12. Michael RAE
  13. Michael RIPPON
  14. Hamish RUTHERFORD

Third time the charm for Foxcroft. Will add a lot to the team. Batting line up looks fairly solid. Interesting they have been able to contract both Foxcroft and Muller. Thought they were only able to have one overseas eligible player.

Very predictable I guess... no newbies in the set up. I suppose they did really well last year so don't see any need for change.

I guess Milne is in to provide the experienced but injury prone proxy for Bennett. I still find it hard to believe there aren't better seam bowlers around in Wellington club cricket than Michael Sneddon or Iain McPeake. And van Beek needs to rediscover his form from a couple of years back, else it's going to be a long, tedious Plunket Shield season.

Interesting move for Sodhi - I've been less and less impressed with his bowling in the last few years (first test/FC cricket, then limited overs too), but the article says he still hopes to play test cricket and at only 29 (unbelievably) there's supposedly still the peak spin years ahead of him. Enough time for reinvention.

Matt Boyle looked pretty promising a while back iirc, but what's happened to Jack Boyle? Never did well in FC but good List A record.

Hope Will O'Rourke has a great season.

Can a mod please move the recent posts to a new thread on the 2022/23 season?

Re Glenn Philips, yes he has a central contract

....who decided on Brett Randell?

Like he's a decent player but we do have our own guys and if you want maximum fc h4x you chase Williams or Keene.

Looks like Otago is very weak batting wise, only contracting four specialist batsmen, with G Phillips contacted centrally.

That leaves it with players like Rippon and Chu needing to take on a fair bit of responsibility, having to bat at 6 or 7 in all formats. Will also put some pressure on Jacob Cumming in the shorter formats.

That's actually a great pick-up by CD. The best (after G Phillips to Otago)

Never been ND's strong point but that's not a whole lot of batting, given Katene Clarke yet to find feet at FC level, Popli up and down and Seifert might sometimes still be away for NZ (though out of favour for now, which makes sense). A lot resting on Raval, Carter and Cooper.

Also want a big season from Fisher - NZ really need him, Sears and O'Rourke to come through and fill the generational fast bowler gap.

With Sears and Bennett in the Wellington attack I'm guessing we'll be seeing some bouncy Basin wickets in this season's Super Smash, will be hilarious watching Welly getting steamrolled on a Seddon park sandpit though. Glad to see Ashok getting a contract with Auckland, hope he gets a bit more FC cricket this season.
