3500 runs @35 and a sr of 125 with match winning knocks all over the world and a defining role in a WC winning campaign in the format isn't enough to put you in the running for ATG status? Jos buttler often gets called an ATG, Maxis batting contributions aren't far off, and he's also a far better fielder than Jos while offering a few overs.
In this era those stats aren't especially remarkable at all.

I'll always think Maxwell never made the most of his ability in ODIs tbh. I watched him take SL apart in the WC semi final at the SCG in 2015 and the bloke just looked a cut above every other player on the park. You watch him play a knock like that and it's hard not to be disappointed with his output since, regardless of there being a number of extenuating circumstances.

He looks like that quite often. Then he gets out.

Yes, I agree on ODI being a bit harsh from my side. But Smith still has to up his game since the ODIs are also going the T20 way nowadays with hitting starting right from ball one.
Bloke made two 60 ball hundreds barely five games ago ffs.
While we are on the subject, any news on the injury?
Would pull my hair out if he misses out on the tests. Also why I always prefer for the tests to be played at the start of the tour.

Maxxy is very close to being an ODI ATG, he's got the Dre Russ/Afridi game breaking strike rate while averaging far far better. It's just that he could have been an all time XI candidate if he was a bit more consistent

Joss is obviously that little bit better and I probably would have him down as a genuine all time xi contender

Those guys with the career strike rates above 115 are quite a bit clear of the run a ball high averaging legends like Kohli and ABDV. It's a big enough gap to be significant and does go some way in reducing the gap between them as batsmen made by the difference in averages

While not disagreeing with most of the high assessments of Maxwell, it would be unwise and a little unfair to compare him with players who bat higher up the order. Coming in later in an innings with a license to hit out boosts his strike rate. In addition, batting lower in the order has resulted in 12% of his knocks being not out. Having said all that, he is an ideal middle/lower order ODI bat, a brilliant field and, on his day, a more than useful bowler.

Well this is the point. Stats suggest his best spots are 5 and 7 where he can get into an innings with overs to spare or start biffing from the time he takes block. It doesn't mean that type of role can be transferred to 3 or 4. Maybe opening where immediate acceleration is the job description. But if you play Maxwell that high then it means he can't really do the finishing job he's best at. Also what do you do with the likes of Smith or Marnus? Finch/Warner open so they have to go lower where their games don't suit the power hitting required.

The idea that Maxie not batting higher represents wasted deliveries is superficial. Batting him high means you've created a deficiency at the end of the innings. We've got openers who can accelerate, middle order players who can consolidate leaving Maxie as the best of the options who can finish. Batting Maxie high just puts everyone in a role they're less good at.

Though I would think twice with 3 4 5 6 7 looking like Maxie, Smith, Travis, Marsh and Carey ... hmmm.

Well this is interesting, I agree with your end assessment about calling Maxwell an ATG excessive, but all your stated reasoning here is so far off the mark.

Not going to get into the absurd "average boosts not outs" that pops up here from time to time, but even if you do believe that Maxwell is the last guy who it would apply to. Guy doesn't need any help throwing his wicket away and would have a much higher number of not outs if he was any other player in his spot.

If you've seen much of him play, you would also be aware that where he bats in the order, or the time of innings, has minimal effect on his strike rate. He bats the same way if he comes in at over 10 as if he comes in at over 40. It's a strength and a limitation.

Other than that agree with both you and Bambino. He'd be a very dangerous top order bat, but it's not where he can best serve his team in ODIs

Whatever it takes!!!
Batting positions in LO cricket are overrated. MSD in the Kirsten era worked it out perfectly I think. And in CSK with Fleming. They always looked at number of overs left when deciding who comes in next. Of course, in case of a collapse you dont have that luxury but with the kind of pitches we get for LO games, that will always be a rarity.

Also is 12% supposed to be a high number for not outs in ODIs? I'm not at work rn so not going to take the time to look up a bunch of players but I wouldn't think it's that high. Virat bats 3 and has 15% not out innings.

Maxwell isn’t a finisher

He can change a game with his batting but he’s no Hussey or Bevan when it comes to seeing it through to the end

In other news, tpc may not play tomorrow and rightly so

Let Burgey's boy Inglis play

I would agree to the extent he gets you close (particularly in T20s) but often falls just short of getting the win. It's still his best role though.

Which is why it's fair to say he's not an ATG but still very good and the best place for him in this team.

It feels like the finisher role has gained a premium in recent years because of how they often have to get going immediately without having the time to get their eye in. An avg of 35 considering that is exceptional imo.
