*Official* IPL 2022

Harshal Patel to Riyan Parag, SIX, what a finish to the innings. Riyan Parag has got RR to 144. On a short of length on off, not a bad ball at all, but Riyan Parag is standing deep and muscles the pull over deep mid-wicket. The ball again flies over the fence. Chahal runs off but there is some argy-bargy between Harshal Patel and Riyan Parag. And the broadcaster right on cue cuts to an ad -break. How apt! From what I saw, there was words exchanged between the bowler and batter, one of RR's subs puts his arm around Harshal to calm things before it all ended]
These boys don’t care about the fair play award anymore

They wanted a Moeen.
Is it basically a case of giving increased batting responsibility to the player perceived as the least important bowler? Cos I’m sort of a Santner-batting apologist but even I know he’s a specialist bowler and a little bit better than a tailender at this level.

It's a 3 or 4 year project now at CSK, and a pet one of Fleming. They have been trying to get him to be this pinch hitting opener at IPL for a while. So I assume once Moeen was injured and they also needed additional options of someone who can bowl in the PP, they went with Santner and hoped that he can come off with all that training they have been doing as a pinch hitter at 3. I have no idea what he was trying to do batting in the last game though. The game prior to that he was playing in a way that you expect, from a pinch hitter.

With that being said I must acknowledge this is unusually non-stats based analysis by me and Santner has a surprisingly good record in domestic T20 generally in contrast to a terrible T20I record.

…..but yeah ultimately batting Santner at 3 and being reluctant to bowl him out evinces a perverse faith in his batting and lack of faith in his bowling. Still would be happy to see him bop a few maximums though.

Think he did not bowl out coz they had the two lefties batting together for a while there. He bowled out in the previous game and I think they fully intend to use him as a 4 overs bowler through the tournament. It was special circumstances this game.

It's very stupid. He can't play anything above 140kph at all but is a world class spinner in the format.

Santner was very good in the last Super Smash tbf, batted 4/5 and was ND's second-best bat IIRC. But that form is evidently and unsurprisingly not translating over.
I had a look and he only played 5 games and batted #5 so well down the runs but has the second highest average of those who played 3 or more at a strike rate equal to Josh Clarkson.

What that doesn't tell us at first glance is he was truly boom-bust. 4 innings, 158 runs and 2 fifties with a high score of 92*. That 92* was in the final though lol.

So he can properly bat in T20 I guess and I'm wrong but I'm not sure that makes him a #3.

I've been watching quite a bit of this over the last few weeks.

Just not finding it as fun as the PSL for some reason.
