Whatever it takes!!!
There were many reasons they lost. The bowling in the 12-18 period, the catching as usual and the batting by Uthappa, Dube and Santner all were issues. You cant back yourself to get 28 in an over. 20, yes. 28 is too many.

his issue isn't that he lacks some quirk, his issue is that he's just an average bowler.

mitchell starc is probably the greatest death bowler of all time because he subscribes to the decades old theory of 150kph inswinging yorkers being quite hard to hit. to pick a less extreme example, most of the best international death bowlers are just really good orthodox bowlers.
not true. Most of the best international death bowlers are weirdos

Bumrah - weird action + good slower balls
Starc - unorthodox action + left arm angle + extreme pace
Tymall Mills - left arm angle + extreme pace + slower balls
Jofra - deceptive action + extreme pace
Jason Holder - not even that good a death bowler, but has unusually high release point

Malinga was a weirdo, Umar Gul had an incredibly good yorker, struggling to think of other prominent death bowlers but in general most good white-ball bowlers are have something unorthodox about them, especially if they're effective at the death. That's what makes them so hard for batter to lineup and hit.

Starc's action is so orthodox you could base a text book on it. Archer as well. There's nothing at all unorthodox about them ffs.

Starc, Jofra and Holder are all orthodox and Bumrah just has a dumb run up. We've all seen kids do the windmill since we were eight. It's only unorthodox if you're an English coach in 2006.

The best international death bowlers are accurate and use subtle changes of pace to **** with timing and/or bowl extremely quickly. Weird actions are fine after the initial 3 months. There's a reason no one is concerned by a 132kph slinger but Malinga was always A Problem.

Maybe orthodox not right word. It's not common is my point. Long arms and really explosive delivery stride. It's new things for the eyes to adjust to.

Accuracy and variations are a given, anyone world class in white ball cricket needs to have those, but Unadkat has nothing that differentiates him from a skillful net bowler. He's still got good career stats cuz the skills are there and will serve him well in most situations, but unless he adds on more pace or comes up with a freaky variation he won't be a legit death bowler. Being able to nail his yorker consistently would help tho - see Nattu.

Mustafizur another freaky bowler who does a job in the death. Can you name a regularly successful death bowler who isn't a freak in some shape or form?

Bravo is one of the goat death bowler's and is pretty orthadox, no? Just uses slower variations and yorkers.

not really a GOAT death bowler going off his stats, but he is pretty good there and does it a lot (partly because he's willing to). Probably the inspiration behind what Unadkat is trying to become I suppose. Lots of variations and plenty of control.

Loads of freaks on this list. Mohammad Naveed isn't a freak but lower standard of cricket, rest are either weird spinners, weird actions (inc super tall dudes with unusual angles), or guys who can consistently bowl 150+.

You're using an extremely generous version of weird, enough to make it meaningless.

By your definition almost every international bowler is weird. It's hard to succeed without 2 to 3 of being tall, fast or accurate with a stock delivery that moves in the air or off the pitch.

Maybe Kemar Roach is the weird one, being a short and slow bowler who isn't noticeably more accurate or moves it more than his contemporaries yet has about 350 international wickets at a good average.

Yup. And this is why Unadkat despite all his skills and experience is capped in terms of what he can accomplish at top flight cricket. Gotta be an outlier to be a standard international quality bowler.

There is still room for 'normal' bowlers to do well in Tests when conditions suit, or if they can compensate for lack of pace/height/movement/unorthodoxy with control/intelligence. But limited overs stuff, especially T20, is much tougher

If you want to be this broad with your definitions then you could have skipped the unorthodoxy debate and just said Unadkat struggles because he isn't very good lol

Basically, to be a good death bowler, you need something that will defeat batsmen with big bats who can swing hard and boundaries that get shorter by the day. Height, pace, swing, dip all matter more than accuracy.

I think this is what the entire argument above was?

well he is good and doesn't struggle in most aspects as a bowler. Good record as well. Could still find a layer of consistency/intelligence that makes him a genuine top tier performer. But he's bland and has nothing exceptional about his bowling, so that's an obstacle he needs to overcome.

Unadkat is a miles better bowler than someone like Umran Malik for example, but Umran has something unique about him that can compensate for relative lack of skill.

hes been getting smashed every game ffs
hasn't been quite as freaky since his shoulder surgery. loss of pace and his off break isn't as hard spun anymore. But for a while he was a great.
