I don't really get it, it's not like all the bowlers bowling to India's lower order are total numpties waiting to be tonked by Jadeja and co. Need more proof for this idea that Jadeja's trying to statpad for himself alone.
No we'd pick Stokes over Axar because Axar is the newest and least experienced of those 3 (of those mentioned he's the only one without a hundred so far). And as for the actual middle order players in India, most of them haven't had the chance to make more of an impact like Stokes simply because of the 3 stooges holding on for quite a while. And even with them holding on India's had an excellent run in Tests so I don't exactly see how having Stokes would've helped India more than someone like Jadeja. He's ostensibly worse than almost all of India's pace attack (and even those who got injured/dropped out of the team can make a case for being as good or better bowlers) and I don't think it's easy to say he'd be a big improvement in the middle order.
Still doesn't mean you should (or can) carry someone like Stokes in the bowling department if you really want to be good in Tests.Good bowlers have never been less valuable as individuals in modern times than they are now tbh, in a manner not seen since the 80s or 90s.
If forced to choose, India themselves would take Stokes over Jadeja because they have Ashwin and Axar. What they don't have is a functional middle order.
I've been swayed to Jadeja probably being the better player here, albeit one who either has not had the opportunity or failed to take the opportunity to perform in the variety of conditions Stokes has, but a large part of Stokes still being so relevant in 2022 apart from him being an English player with the usual hype behind him is until very recently he was arguably in the top 10 batsmen in the world and almost definitely in the top 20. Jadeja is a replaceable spin bowling allrounder who gets juggled around along with Ashwin and Axar away from favourable conditions.
