My Post WWII Test Top 10

jayjay

A lot of talk about my lists so let me put my money where my mouth is.
It's difficult in cricket creating a list across all eras as the game and its participants have changed so drastically but the post WWII could be regarded as part of "modern" cricket. I am also limiting this to tests only as a considerable chunk of post WWII cricket took place pre-ODI/T20 era and I do not want to muddy the waters. I may put together a separate post-1975 list for all formats.

There are one major inclusion criteria: a minimum of 25 tests in the time period.

Criteria I keep in mind when ranking: skill set, range of ability, impact on his team, impact on opponents, standing among contemporaries, wickets/run, averages/strike rates, to name a few.

1. Garry Sobers WI
2. Viv Richards WI
3. Sachin Tendulkar IND
4. Imran Khan PAK
5. Muttiah Muralitharan SL
6. Glenn McGrath AUS
7. Wasim Akram PAK
8. Sunil Gavaskar IND
9. Shane Warne AUS
10. Brian Lara WI

If I get the time, I may even post some write ups. But here ya go folks!

I would go:
  1. Garry Sobers
  2. Imran Khan
  3. Muttiah Muralitharan
  4. Richard Hadlee
  5. Sachin Tendulkar
  6. Viv Richards
  7. Malcolm Marshall
  8. Jacques Kallis
  9. Glenn McGrath
  10. Shane Warne
Of course, it can change quite a bit on another day. Steve Smith definitely can make it by end of his career.

Pretty good list with 7 of those names also appearing on mine. Just goes to show that there are about 10-20 cricketers who could at any point have an argument for top 10 cricketers in tests across this period.

Kallis is a great addition, I always exclude him just because he lacked a bit of the spark that each of the guys I mentioned had. Plus I can't leave out Lara who was mesmeric in the 90s and Gavaskar who was an absolute wall as an opener during a great era of pace bowling.

I'm someone who always wants to include Gilly, he was a great cricketer in every sense of the word. Terrific batsman, all time great keeper and a sound cricketing brain. Again, he is left out on the strength of the names included. Easily a top 20 though.

While not in total agreement with some, I see merit in the lists posted so far and would find it difficult to post my own list, even though I have seen almost all actually playing.

The difficulty I find is rating an ATG batsman above an ATG bowler or all-rounder. I find it easier to compile an ATG Post WWII XI but that has been done previously, on numerous occasions, and that isn't what this thread is about.

Oh Miller is post WWII. Forgot about him. Although would probably be at the fringe of my top 10

Leaving Mcgrath out is the toughest decision here but yeah, this is the best ATG team that one can come up with.

Given 25 test criteria,I’m not including Bradman like everyone cause he played 15 tests after World war 2 .But scored 2000 runs at average of 105 at age 38-40.Otherwise he is of course no.1.
My list
1.Sobers
2.Lillee
3.Kallis
4.V.Richards
5.Imran
6.Murali
7.Tendulkar
8.Hutton
9.Warne
10.Mcgrath
