He's averaging 40 since the last Ashes but that's also with a strike rate of 40. If he actually scored at a normal pace again he'd be completely fine.

He needs a home series against SL where he can be at about 60% of his old self and still make 800 runs in three tests at a SR of about 75. That would get him back on track.

Yeah I was really not convinced early on, but his last two innings have been great. And his keeping seems to have improved quite a lot too (albeit the main technical flaw he had in the Ashes hasn't been exposed here).
