CW's Ranking of All-Rounders (Tests)

It's a tough condition, but batting at anything beyond 6 means you are not being picked in the side as a batsman. Bowling outside of the top 4 means you are not being picked for your bowling. Probably being 5th bowler is ok, so long as its regular and you are not just bowling junk overs and probably batting 7 is fine in a team not lacking batting quality. But at 5th bowler and 7th batsman, you are borderline. Being 8th position or more though, you are definitely not an all rounder. No team is planning their batting around you.

Yea so IMO this whole list is now pointless because everyone's just picking all rounders based on their own meaning and not a consensus.

Some are picking the best bowler/bat who can also bowl/bat, however little, while others are picking more rounded all rounders - i.e. the best actual all rounder.

I think it has petered out because we have passed the point of obvious all rounders (Though Hadlee is probably the last of these before it becomes joke land).

There are still lots of obvious allrounders:

Procter, S Pollock, Goddard, Barlow, McMillan
Flintoff, Stokes, Woolley, Bailey
Reid, Cairns, Oram, Vettori, De Grandhomme
Mankad, Shastri, Jadeja, Ashwin
Holder
Mushtaq Mohammed, Faheem Ashraf??
Noble, Armstrong, Benaud, Matthews, Watson

The way I see, an all-rounder cannot be considered a tailender or a part-time bowler. That is what separates guys like Akram and Hooper from real allrounders.

I think no.7 is still a position in which runs are expected of you hence most keepers bat that position. Beyond that you are a tailender.

5th bowler is not borderline since a 5-man bowling attack is normally considered the most ideal in test cricket. That was essentially Kallis' bowling position. But if its only something you occasionally bowl in then you are a part-timer.

A few of these names have cropped up earlier in the voting. Some fine contenders, but no Greig or Dexter?

Yeah - I concede the 5th bowler condition, so long as you are a contributing 5th bowler. If you are only bowling a few overs to just get through the numbers or give the main guys a rest, it doesn't count. If you are regularly picking up a wicket or two, then that qualifies. I'd also give up my batting criteria to say 7th position is acceptable so long as it is regular.

I mean, all those guys Fuller Pilch just listed are all rounders, just verging on being **** all rounders. None of them are making All time great teams (Proctor the exception but with the Richards problem of too few) , though, this list is not about that, so ignore me. Just had to voice some half baked opinion somewhere while I wait for the current mafia game to end.

Yeah in hindsight maybe agreeing on the criteria would have been good.

If the criteria is to be good enough to be picked as a bat or bowler alone, I think it may be too strict and few qualify for that.

Some of them do make national all time teams though (or at the very least up for consideration) so clearly not bad all rounders by any means.
