Yeah if NZ were going to pick a spin option in this game I reckon it would've been Rachin for CdG... and I don't think anyone can really argue NZ would've been better off without Colin in this game.
Also worth noting that Maharaj has only taken 3 out of 14 wickets despite bowling beautifully, and SA batted first.
I think five seamers should be basically illegal but I don't think it's cost NZ here as much as some people seem to.

yea, two legside edges and a dumb aerial cut shot have been far more costly than ravindra not playing, unless it is revealed in that alternate reality that will young played ahead of mitchell at 5 and scored 250.
didn't see today but i can't imagine being 25/3 was especially helpful either.

What Maharaj brings to the attack is more what its about, rather than directly number of wickets he takes.
I don't quite understand why the NZ supporters are jumping on the spin bandwagon. My complaints (and the other SA supporters) have been the specific dropping of 'Maharaj' rather than not including a spinner... if you don't have a quality spinner then going with an all pace bowling attack is fine. But SA do have Maharaj and a quality seam all rounder, so why go in with a 5 man pace attack when you can have better balance? That was my complaint last Test match and in this match, much better selection from SA has resulted in better balance and options for Elgar.

Steve your Will Young theory stands out like golden peaches at the moment.
Conway not opening in England in June would have to go down as almost comical.
think he could be an outstanding opening bat, besides what more compelling evidence is required when you score a double ton on foreign soil
in your test debut? sure this will weaken the 3/4 spots, but NZ need him here for at least this particular series.

Just wandering in general what true test cricket enthusiasts really think about this situation.
While most kiwis no doubt are hoping for as many world cup points as possible, as to qualify for the final, the question here is how much
relevance should be taken into achieving that goal?
In essence, are we playing years of test series, all aimed at making a final for a one off shootout?
Looking back at scorecards in years to come, would personally rather see NZ win their first ever test series against South Africa 1-0,
as opposed to 1-1 because we played to aggressively trying to make it 2-0 so we got more brownie points.
the difference between 1-0 or 2-0 doesn't really matter, assuming the goal was to win the series.
for these reasons I strongly believe that NZ should go all out(not literally)and play their lives out for the DRAW.
it's time to go STONEWALL, and leave anything possible(Tom if your reading, that doesn't necessarily mean the straight ones)
CDG will still have to play some natural shots, but even he'll be required for many a dot ball.
7 batsman have a chance to star in some way or another and create some history, but it's a determined team effort that's required from here.
roll the clock back just 2 months and NZ pulled off an inspired display of survival in India, surely this pitch and these conditions no worse than then?

Will Young of made the squad for the 3rd test if there was one?
Reminders me of Boucher but stronger weight of runs.
Is it overreaction? And will we win in England?
There's holes in this side. The selection of Young as an opener is a misstep. Latham can't score runs v top 6 opposition. Kane is injured a lot. Ross is gone. Blundell is unreliable. Jamieson has hit a flat patch. We can't rely on CdG's bowling potentially as much as in the past. Wagner is down 6-8km. We're not the side we were last year or 2-3 years ago.
And SAF having all the luck seems to be me to be bunkum. They played far better cricket. Both teams got to do what they wanted at the toss, and SA were especially noteworthy in batting and making it count. They've exposed us a little bit. They've knocked over our top order twice cheaply, and our bowling plans have looked average when we can't take wickets up front and Wagner can't bounce them out any more.

Not a fan of having all of Southee, Boult and Henry in the same lineup unless the conditions demand it.

Averages like 50 with the bat and mid to late 20s with ball, he is a batting allrounder at all levels below int cricket so far int cricket stats don't show it yet but maybe like kallis time will prove it.
