6. Brock Lesnar vs John Cena, Extreme Rules 2012

This was Brock's big return match after he'd walked out on WWE and become UFC heavyweight champion in the interim and the atmosphere for this match is something else. Brock carries himself as an invading force, an outsider not bound by the usual rules of WWE and the match has a reckless, out of control feel that WWE matches often aspire to but rarely create. Almost straight away Brock cuts open Cena with a flurry of near-shoot force elbows to the head. Bless Cena, if I was the company's biggest star and they came to me with a proposed match layout of 'We want the freakishly strong cage-fighting champion to shoot elbow you in the head' I'm pretty sure I'd have said 'Actually I'd prefer not to be elbowed in the head by the cage fighter.' Cena is great at selling a huge beating and Brock delivers one for the ages. I remember a lot of complaints at the time about the booking of Cena winning, but the match itself (including the finish) is a classic.

5. Rowdy Roddy Piper vs Bret Hart, Wrestlemania 8

This is a face vs face match with a bit of spice to it. The pre match interviews set the story up perfectly: Piper talks patronisingly about knowing Bret as a cute little kid and Bret doesn't take kindly to it. In WWE Piper had been a heel for most of his run, and as the young upstart seems to be getting the better of him in the match, his penchant for the dark side starts to resurface. A great storytelling match with Heenan on atg form on commentary as a bonus.

4. Shawn Michaels vs Mankind, Mind Games 1996

Another match with a unique feel as Foley gives the performance of his life as the deranged Mankind. This is the perfect mixture of brawling, wild spots and character work. Mankind is an interesting 'monster' character as he isn't huge but can absorb stupid amounts of punishment so doesn't dominate the match the way e.g. Taker would but never stops being a threat. He also nails the psychotic, unpredictable side of his character as every couple of minutes he seems to do something you wouldn't expect, whether it's taking a particularly nasty bump into the steel steps that few others would be prepared to take, or launching himself at Michaels in a way that hurts himself so long as it hurts his opponent too, or even stabbing himself violently in the knee that Michaels has been working over. It's easily one of the best performances in company history. Though I've not talked about him much, Michaels is reliably good too, showing a much more violent streak than usual in trying to stop the lunatic challenger. The only downer is the finish which is a lame run in (and a mistimed run in at that). There's a fun post match brawl at least.

4. The Shield vs The Wyatt Family, Elimination Chamber 2014

If the Mind Games match was booked as a relatively throw away affair without a proper finish, made great by the performers, this is one where the booking and story really augment the in ring action to create something special. The Shield had been pushed famously hard right from their debut, with a long winning streak in trios matches beating a number of 'super teams' of established stars through a consistent strategy of divide and conquer. More recently cult leader Bray Wyatt and his 'family' had emerged as another dominant faction and here they look to utilise the Shield's own strategy against them of causing chaos and picking off isolated opponents. This had non-stop action, a red hot crowd, layered storytelling and strong performances, especially from the late, great Luke Harper as Bray's right hand man who is superb and carries most of the work for his side.

Found this video of wrestlers calling spots fascinating. It's unreal how quickly they process and execute each other's instructions.

That Shield v Wyatts match should have been on the WM card that year instead of the Shield being wasted on beating a load of old men and Bray being involved in the Cena fiasco

Yeah thats a good video. Guessing it happens all the time though?
Yeah I always try catching them calling spots when they're in a submission hold but never seem to see it. Probably will now though.

Actually, this might ruin it for me.

Yeah this happens all the time, it's just that when watching on TV most of it'll be hidden by clever editing/camera angles etc. Good workers are usually able to communicate discreetly as well.

John Cena a terrible offender for absolutely bellowing out his spot calling though. Love him but he is one of the absolute worst for this.

Can we have everyone's lists of their favourite pay-per-views of the 21st century?
I've not got a list as I've not watched full shows for years, but some I remember being good are:

-Royal Rumble '00
-Wrestlemania 17
-No Mercy 02
-Wrestlemania 19
-Royal Rumble '07
-Money in the Bank 2011
-Extreme Rules 2012
-Summerslam 2013

Pretty much all the NXT Takeovers from late 2014 to early 2018 were good.

New Japan from 2014/15-2018 was gold. Wrestle Kingdom 9-12, Dominion every year, G1 every year, really any big show from that time period was a must-watch. Cagematch is a good resource to check out for that sort of stuff.

Not Terrible
All AEW PPVs so far have been very good, a few have been great. They only do 4 a year so like NXTs golden era the quality is typically very high.
