CW's Ranking of Spinners (Tests)

One thing I will give Murali credit for is that I never saw a spinner make Lara clueless in a spell as he did in the second innings of the Kingston test in 2003. Lara was new at the crease and he was really struggling to read his variations. I have tried to find the exact clip but you can see some deliveries here from 1:14:30 to 1:18:00.

Aside from that one 7-fer in Kanpur, Murali doesn't have anything of note in India. Yeah Murali is better overall against India but its not the slam dunk that I used to think.

Sidhu's comments were more about how they react to getting hit around, not on who is better.

His own captain, Jayawardene, said Murali was defensive and both and he and Jayasuria tried to get him to be more aggressive. Which is fine, that worked for him, but I prefer Warne because he is more likely to bounce back after losing control.

Murali is the bowler more likely to get a new batsman at the crease out, whereas Warne would get a batsman even if he is settled.
You pick really weird stuff to complain about players over. The guy took 6wpm and struck at the same SR as some of the ATG quicks from his era did.

Its possible that what you are saying is correct, but it would be like attacking Warne as a leggie for being less economical than Murali... pretty damn meaningless.

I have zero doubts that if Warne played with Muralis pitches and team composition and that many minnow games he would end up with similar numbers as Murali. When McGrath wasnt around in Sri Lanka 2004 or Ashes 2005,Warne was taking 7-8 wickets a test.

So the debate then is going to be won or lost on minor weird points such as playing style or holes in the record. They are that close.

And someone might have zero doubts that if Murali played with Mcgrath and could capitalize on the pressure that Mcgrath and the Aussie batsmen built, he would have ended with even better numbers than now.

Murali vs Warne has been done to death just like Lara vs Tendulkar. Need not walk on that again now.

You could be right, though would it have been that much of a factor that the selection would have picked the inferior bowler for handful more runs when he's batting at ten anyway?
Not so much inferior, but slightly behind if not equally matched, then the additional batting would come into play. Slip fielding only factors in because we didn't choose Smith or Lara so that was a necessary evil at that point, he definitely wasn't an ATG slipper.

I'll go Warne just because I believe that leg spin is probably harder to bowl and he didn't quite have the home conditions that Murali did.

Whatever it takes!!!
To me, I will always pick Wasim and Warne over say a Murali or an Ambrose in my ATG XIs because I like the additional skillsets they bring to the XI but as pure bowlers, Murali is pretty clearly better than Warne IMO and same with Ambrose and Wasim.

So Wasim's left handed variation trump's the extra batting that Imran would bring in your opinion?

Whether or not these points you are making are correct, Murali is clearly the GOAT in terms of taking wickets.

Gilchrist would have been a better bat if he could have been more aggressive at times. Ragging on him for not being so would not be much worse than going after Murali.

Yes because Imran at 8 is basically a wasted spot IMO. He has to bat 7 and if I already have Gilchrist at that slot, I would prefer the skiddy variation of Wasim's bowling along with others in my line up. I think my actual attack would look something like Ambrose - Wasim - Steyn - Warne.

Of course, as a rule I only tend to pick players I have seen for my AT XI.

Still unlikely. Warne had a good pace attack to bring new batsmen to the crease. Murali only had Vaas. Still he averages better than Warne.

As if Murali was a slouch in the field. He was electric in his younger days. Probably the best exponent of caught an bowls. The one he caught of Kiran More was damn special.

I doubt it,off spinners don't have great numbers in Australia,He would have done great away from home, but at home I don't think so maybe he will average most likely close to 30.
