CW's Ranking of Batsmen (Tests)

Line and Length

Cricketer Of The Year
Out of sena, you picked all except Australia.
Out of minnows, you picked bd but not Zim.

And you did not pick other away countries in the first post like WI, sl and Pak where he was good.

Hence, I said that it is cherry picking to just pick the countries where he was bad.
You missed my point. Sehwag was bad in several countries, Compton averaged well over 30 in ALL countries.

Compton's away average is brought down by one series. His knee was ****ed up and he really shouldn't have played. Wisden describes it as:

"That November he had his right kneecap removed; his surgeon kept it as a souvenir, before giving it to MCC as part of the Lord's archive. Compton's biographer, Tim Heald, examined it and reported that it was like "a medium-sized mushroom, honey-coloured and honey-combed"."

Compton's kneecap was removed in November 1955, and England didn't play any Tests that winter (if they had, it's clear that Compton wouldn't have played - he didn't play county cricket until July 1956). He probably shouldn't have been picked for the tour of SA the following winter (242@24.20), but his really bad away series was much earlier: 53@7.57 in the 1950-1 Ashes. His knee was an issue then (the original injury was back in 1938!), but it wasn't leaving him completely incapacitated - he averaged 92 in the other FC matches on the tour. In his book "End of an Innings", he's not very sure why he had such a bad series.

His other away series were:
459@51 v Aus 1946-7
38@38 v NZ 1946-7
406@51 v SA 1948-9
107@36 v NZ 1950-1
348@50 v WI 1953-4
191@38 v Aus 1954-5

Cricketer Of The Year
Victor Trumper.

I like how Ataraxia and I have been having our own mini Nourse/Trumper comp for pages and pages now without anyone giving either of them another vote. He's pulled ahead now as Nourse finally has a second vote from someone.

I voted for Grace, Richards and Ranji multiple times. If you were not voting for Trumper I would have voted for him at least once.

Well underrated outside of CW then I guess. Won't see any international player picking Smith over Hayden or Sehwag despite being way better. That's when I realized that peer ratings were somewhat useless.
He was better, arguably. I think he was definitely better but there’s not THAT much in it to be honest.

There hasn’t been an opener like Sehwag since.

Sehwag had a horrible horrible decline. There’s an 80 or something test stretch where he’s averaging closer to 55 than 50 (and also had respectable away stats in this period). I know it’s cherry picking and I know it was the flat pitch area so shave a few off - but you can’t ignore his SR that basically won games. No one has come close to his SR since.

There are ODI legends of the game around his time that don’t strike at the rate in ODIs as he does in tests.
