Besides Root Will Any England Batter Average Over 40 This Decade?

Hello everyone, I thought this would be a fun question to follow through this decade. If there is interest I could add a poll.

I think there should be a 50 innings minimum. This is how they are all doing so far

If Stokes concentrated solely on batting and never bowled again do you think he could push his average up, or is he in decline?

The current crop is extremely doubtful, and without seeing a comprehensive list of 16/17 year old South Africans it's hard to predict the future this early in the decade.

Heather Knight is averaging 155.50 in the 2020s and Sophia Dunkley is averaging 67.00, so looking pretty likely for those two.

I think 35 is the new benchmark for quality test batsmen and 30 for normal test batsmen. So 40 seems a reach but I expect Crawley and Lawrence to do 30+ and maybe even 35+ if they can work on their shot selection. The ability is definitely there.

Based on? By that token, Colin de Grandhomme is a quality Test bat. So is Joe Burns.

I get what you're saying, but 40+ is still where you need to be to be considered quality. 45+ very good, 50+ outstanding.

Will any England batsman get there? Crawley would be the one I'd hold out hope for, but he'd have to bat away from the opening spot to get there.

I mean, we can assume the cycle will turn and all that but I took the spirit of the question as asking if any of the current and recent England players can average 40 apart from Joe Root.

Since Root debuted, no batsmen has averaged over 40 except Cook, who only averaged like 41 himself. The next highest is Stokes who is pretty inconsistent himself, averaging around 35. He's pretty much had this poor lineup around him his whole career. Imagine how much Root would average if he was part of a decent batting lineup like India or NZ. At least 55.

Also I think Root will be fine this decade. Since the beginning of 2018 when batting has got extremely tough, he has averaged like 48 away from home. To compare, Kohli has averaged 40 away from home since then, Williamson has averaged 36 away from home since then. Babar has been quite good as well and averaged 47 away from home since then.

Still 8 years left in this decade. Could possibly unearth someone who can average 40 over the latter half of it. But English cricket really needs an overhaul of some sorts if they're to regularly produce good batters again.
