Allen's bat speed is amazing. You never know which one he sends out of the park. On a similar note Rachin scores as quickly without even taking much risk or going berserk, plenty of class. When they're both batting together it's a sheer pleasure to watch, one force and the other class. Hope their careers rise in parallel and we get to watch them dominate attacks in the coming years. Still very early days but these two opening for black caps in some years in one day cricket is imminent.

no you don't understand, we need to bed in around the South African heritage player who is 29 and averages 27 after 76 FC games. These kiwi kids just lack the good Christian values to succeed at test level. Just look at our rivals India for what Christianity can do to a team.

Yeah Allen is the kind of guy who wins you trophies. Real fear factor there. Him and Clarkson in the same NZ side is joocy.

Bowes was playing a Ford Trophy game, not sure what his FC stats have to do with it. Allen could average even less than 27 after 76 FC games, the way he's going.

Talk about trying to deflect by whistling past the graveyard, anyway. NZ's getting to the verge of seeing a Nathan Smith or Mitchell Santner playing at No. 5 in Tests, regressing back to very nervous and homely-looking Test run production it had about ten years ago.

Maybe we can all take the piss out of Ajaz Patel's faith, and the Bangladeshi team's faith while we're at it?

I mean, ten years ago they really were utter no-hopers when it came to NZ red ball play, just nothing more than club players. Meanwhile, what became of that PINO (progressive in name only) Flem274*?

Ah, well you see, he still dicks around like a little kid on cricket forums for hours on end. He's very much like he was back in his teens in about 2007.

Yeah. He reminds me a bit of Ryder in that I've never seen another NZ player able to punish perfectly respectable bowling like them.
Absolutely. Thats a difference from Gup as well, I've heard the comparison but I don't think it works. Gup can be tied down by good bowling very effectively, especially short of a length. Allen obviously can get himself out with the best of them, but also has that quality that you describe that you can feel like you're bowling pretty well and pick your sweater back up from the umpire with 20 more runs on your figures.

Ryder had that, McCullum had that, and probably another that I reckon had that was Lou Vincent (varying levels of success with those three for different reasons). Allen is in that mould and it's exciting to see where he can go to.

You're the one who pushes South African upbringings and faith.

I for one support this.

Well, all the games today will be washed out. Perhaps Dunedin might fit in a T20ish length game this afternoon.

Glenn Phillips's first FC game in 9 months will end in a single innings of a duck in 7 balls. Can put a line through his slight chance of a test call up.

Ravindra got 40ish smoothly played deliveries on Friday, to add to his 140 balls over last 2 months, but washout today, twiddle thumbs for next 5 days before lhis last ListA chance before the test squad will assemble. I reckon he's a lock for the test starting 11 based on that stellar lead up.

Guptill got a 60 against a test quality attack. But that's probably too funky and regressive.

Still think Phillips is a sure shot for SA series. It's not his fault Auckland couldn't play a first class game earlier.

Don't watch his dismissal from yesterday then - it was pretty horrendous. I don't think he'll even be near the squad. He scored no runs in county cricket last English summer, and is clearly not in great form.

The player who comes in is just doing a caretaker role. They're getting let go as soon as KW returns. Honestly, Guptill would not be the worst call. Not who I would pick, but I would understand their reasoning.

Just did, I guess credit to Southee for a late in dipper rather than lack of ability from Phillips?

Every year I see Phillips change his set up. Last year he was Steve Smith junior and this season he's got a front foot trigger and a very open stance. I don't know why for the heck of it he fiddles with his setup.

The pitch looks good for batting, there's some turn for sure. Seifert out to Somerville both inning. Seifert has played cpl, got to train vs spin lots playing for IPL but doesn't seem to be making progress vs spin.

I'd say a little from column A, a little from column B.

Yeah, that's probably owing to Glenn's personality. In case we hadn't noticed and I'm sure we all have through on-field mics, interviews etc, he's a jumpy wee bugger. Never stands still. He's been an opening batsman, a middle order batsman, a keeper, an off spinner, back to the odd stint keeping this year, and yeah his technique keeps changing. I don't know if he's capable of keeping things simple. He probably needs someone with influence and a cool head to tell him to pick something and stick with it in the aid of consistency.

Thierry says it more harshly that me but I think we're starting to see that Seifert might be a pretty average player that's got a lot more opportunities than he might've deserved, because he vaguely looks like Brendon McCullum and that gave Baz the motivation to push his barrow.

One of the rare players that changes technique every season. He's not even played much first class to figure and fix anything. He's now trying to stay still which belies his nature. He was going all right batting like Steve Smith. That's when he was scoring loads of runs. One reason could be he wants to get forward which is where most bowlers have been trying to tie him down. That said his strength is back foot play and nothing wrong with that. Most bowlers don't pitch it up for long periods of time anyways. From the 6 balls he played he looks to be getting forward and his blocks are looking way better.

I think he's a reasonable player but does struggle against spin. Could probably be a mental battle than anything. He goes block, block bash, occasional sweeps, classic kiwi style of playing spin bowling. If he can learn to rotate strike vs spin he can still turn things around. I do think he's a pretty good player of pace bowling.

The rate at which Finn Allen is going in white ball cricket, he'll push Seifert out.

Intriguing last couple of sessions coming up with Auckland needing just under 200. There's turn in the pitch. Santner has had reasonable time with the bat in the last few games, can he bag a few wickets today on a last day pitch with good turn in it?
