The only way this goes away at all is if his girlfriend completely recants everything she has alleged and refuses to cooperate with the police, difficult to see him being prosecuted without her agreeing to give evidence

But even then it's still an absolute disaster for Utd

You think the CPS might send it to trial without her co-operation on the basis of public interest?

They’ve made a lot out of the fact that DV can be prosecuted without the agreement of the victim. How much more evidence could you get without the agreement of the victim?

Maybe, but whether he'd be convicted would be touch and go I reckon

Literally the only evidence against him is the victim's word, and if she's actively saying "nah it was all bollocks"... It would make it pretty dicey

Edit: should have said "successfully prosecuted" rather than just "prosecuted" tbh - chances of him being out on trial pretty likely I'd say

Disagree with that a bit, I actually think bringing in Ronaldo was a disaster for keeping him out as he was a serious talent.

Yet all that matters zilch now, **** him and hope he rots in jail, no matter how good or not he might have been.

Is it easier to get a conviction on a ***ual assault charge? I know that a rape conviction is notoriously hard to get and the victim often goes through a world of pain with the trial. Is any of that improved if just looking for a ***ual assault conviction? Are there any stats on the % conviction rates for rape vs. ***ual assault?

Not sure of the stats, but in theory it's not any easier

The difference between rape and ***ual assault (by penetration) is that with rape the penetration is done via penis, whereas ***ual assault is penetration via any other object/body part. This part of the offence is not usually difficult to prove.

The difficulty is that both rape and ***ual assault will only be committed if a) victim does not consent AND b) the accused person does not reasonably believe that victim consented.

In other words, even if the accused accepts they penetrated victim and there was no consent, it's effectively a defence to say "oh I thought there was consent even if there wasn't". If a jury can be convinced that an alleged rapist might have genuinely held such a belief the only possible verdict is not guilty.

This is why lots of rape trials/cases collapse.
