***Official New Zealand Domestic Season 2021/22***

Immenso

International Vice-Captain
I should clarify.

I'm meaning only this season re: Seiffert.

Usually, he plays enough of all forms. Good enough balance. I'm not labeling him a FC shirker.

But this year. Because of covid. The T20WC, the re-schedduled IPL (of which he got an opportunity to be basically a bench player). Means he has had a lopsided balance, no FC at all. And he has probably got himself to an almighty funk.

When things are more back to normal and NZC hace more control again of scheduling. Examples like this should be warning to make sure fringe blackcaps get good balance of formats to play in.

The last 6 or 7 years of having elite players who can step up to test cricket regardless of the prep NZC give them - is not a normal state of being. Will need to try harder in future when dealing with lesser mortals.

I get the feeling that quasi-T20 specialists can get themselves into the almightiest of ruts. Especially if lower order finishers like Seiffert has transitioned too.

Too much travel, too much bench time. Too many idle days between measly 40 over matches. Too few balls batted, if any, in actual games he plays. Too much quarantining. Not enough batting.

Needs to play some FC.

He is basically the complaints sbout England batting personified. He should also be the canary in the mine for NZC to pay attention to our own scheduling as our golden batting generation starts to age. Need to make sure their charges are getting a balanced diet.
Yeah, I think you're spot on. He's not a natural hitter, doesn't turn the strike over, doesn't have a great technique and seems like he's one of those 'he's on' guys who smokes it when he's made a few, but can get in big ruts. I guess a T20I average of 23 over 40 matches speaks to that, and mind you his T20 career in general is just as average.

TH will tell you he's rode the coattails of looking like Brendon with your eyes squinted, which has spurred Baz on over the years to back him in.

Another one who's battling, not as much but certainly hasn't kicked on in any form recently is Glenn Phillips.

Seifert looked like a tailender all through that innings. Surely must we well behind both Cleaver and Fletcher now. Cleaver looks to be absolutely loving his cricket at the moment

Matt Fisher bowled quite nicely. Nice, uncomplicated action. Had a few variations and definitely hurried up the batters we when he wanted to.

Nathan Smith's brother, Jeremy Smith, has got 8-23 for North Otago against South Canterbury. He's batting 6 as well, 26 years old. Wonder if he's in the reckoning to replace his brother for Otago.
