Australia had to have taken a minimum of 5 wickets prior to the second new ball to have a shot. That helps.

I quite like that captaincy tbh. Plenty would hold him back for the new ball
Yeah makes a lot of sense. Also makes this a very long old session for England to survive, no more just waiting around for the new rock

I think Australia's spent a lot of time trying to get reverse, but given how rare that is post-2018 I just would've had Lyon wheeling on one end unless there were two righties at the crease.

I don’t quite get a RH batsman taking an off stump guard to a left armer reversing it away like Buttler did there. Surely makes you play at more than you need to?

Think part of the rationale is that you know exactly where your off stump is so it helps with leaving
