4th Test at Sydney (?) - Jan 5-9 2022

Fair effort from England and Bairstow in particular. Looked like they'd be knocked off for 100 at one point. Bairstow's knock was great, good efforts from Stokes and Wood too.

Poor bowling from Australia at times though, didn't seem to have the best Plan B when England went after the bowling. How much cricket we get Day 4 I think will be key, but the first innings lead looks like it might be low enough that England might have a non-zero chance of pulling off a heist.
Looking at the forecast I'd expect us to get at least half the day in, it seems to be pretty good until mid-afternoon when a big storm is meant to hit

Starc will be crucial tomorrow morning I reckon. Bairstow will go LO mode and Cummins isn't the best at blasting away the tail either. Full, fast
and at the stumps to Leach.

Yeah when I said three #11s to come I meant the next three. I don't think Bairstow really trusts them to last more than a couple of overs, and Wood is handy enough but realistically only a reasonable #9 batting a spot too high in these conditions. Not exactly known for his defensive stickability either so he could fall at any time even if he'd be good to average 17 or whatever.
Sorry didn’t realise he was batting 8 and that’s definitely 1 spot too high

He was second leading run scorer for England last tour as well. Maybe his game is just more suited to batting here than elsewhere. That was just a great ton to watch today, and he can’t be worse with the gloves than Buttler, surely?

Buttler is at best the 3rd ranked red ball keeper batsman in England

31 and still being picked on potential

great innings from bairstow today, exemplary stuff and top spine.

both he and stokes batted without fear and they were justly rewarded

Nice to wake up and see we competed for a change. Well played Bairstow. Hope that isn't England's only non-Root ton for the year.

Whatever other criticisms can be leveled at Bairstow, lack of guts isn't one of them. Very well batted indeed. I had to smile when one of the commentators on 5 Live said he looked 'gingerly' at his hand after Cummins had hit it. I don't think she had any idea what she had just said.

One other thought. If Stokes and Bairstow are unable to field in Australia's second innings, are we going to see Mark Wood batting at number 6 in our second knock? I think this is something to be cherished.

Curious, was it cold in Sydney today? There was a bit of rain about but wouldn’t have thought it needed a sweater.

That’s a very bad take. Healy is probably in the top five keepers to have played test cricket
yeah he is arguably the best wicketkeeper australia (maybe marsh is comparable but i don't think there is anyone else?) has ever produced and among the best pure keepers ever...
