Former England Players Who You'd Transplant into the Current Side

5 is too many.

Trying to stick to 2 only I’d just go 2 openers

Cook
Stewart
Malan
Root
Anyone
Stokes
Foakes
4 bowlers

They really should play Foakes.

In the 1990s which was viewed as a nadir time for English cricket, pretty much everyone batsman who played for England would make this team - Atherton, Stewart, Thorpe, Smith, Hussain, Hick, Ramprakash, Butcher

Yeah, this maybe the silliest post of all time. Pretty sure there were many other bats in the decade other than those, Gallian, Maynard, Lathwell, Fairbrother, Morris, Wells, gawd I could go on and on...

One could probably swap everyone bar Root, and Stokes (Assuming you bring in Prime Anderson and Broad) for some other bloke from earlier this century to improve this team.

Utterly ridiculous, Anderson is having one of his best series in Oz. We are terrible but this is hyperbolic nonsense that ignores how bad we where for much of the 80s and 90s.

yeah okay if you say so

Let us always remember Ramps managed to play 52 matches with a 27 average honestly rose-tintedness for that decade, nah I'm not having it.

We have the worst opening problems, but I still wouldn't have Darren Maddy in, I've ever known, but the best number 4.

Aftab Habib played in that series too, what a glorious time to be alive.

oh you said earlier this century, maybe, but we've been pretty good compared to 80s and 90s this millennia. Gawd this reminds me of talking to Richard, which is why I guess my hackles are up.

Did Maynard get messed around by the selectors? He was such a class player when he was the visiting pro for Northern Districts. I read a theory that if he had played for Middlesex rather than Glamorgan he would have a more consistent run in the team. That said, the current selectors seem to be chopping and changing a bit like the mid-90's panel.

Five replacements from the past:

1. Strauss - captain and quality opener.

2. Chris Broad - great record in Australia and you get to see a father and son in the same team.

3. Michael Vaughan - matched peak Hayden in his only Ashes down under.

4. David Gower - aesthetics and class.

5. Jack Russell - best keeper I've seen.

Standby: Flintoff or even de Freitas for Woakes.

Maynard had pretty bad technical deficiencies for a test bat I reckon, but yes probably should have been given a better chance, oh and Russell may be the most over rated keeper ever, was poor to spin.

Look there were players in the 90s that would have improved this team, but to say that all the batsman in that benighted period would is just ridiculous, but has gotten two likes, which just shows what's the ****ing point of any reasoned discussion. I mean Lathwell?

One player for this England side
I'd go with Trott. Bloody good player. Due to the amount of time he spent at the crease, it could potentially allow Stokes, Buttler etc to play their natural game. He absorbed pressure so well

Yeah, agree some of those would be no better. I don't think they meant literally all 90's English batsman. That's really interesting about Russell, you would likely have seen him in action more than me - I mainly remember him from games against NZ and this clip.

English batsman in the 1990s who played more tests than Ollie Pope

stewart
Atherton
Gooch
Thorpe
Hussain
Smith
Ramorakash
Crawley
Butcher

only Ramprakash had a lower average

All the spuds you are talking about barely played

jackasses like Burns, Sibley andPope are playing 20-30 tests. Bairstowhas played 70s

the core in the 1990s was vastly better leave alone the 80s and 00s

this is the worst English team I have seen in an Ashes
