the decline in test match batting pre dates the 2015 supposed switch to white ball focus

it's a smoke screen by county fans. green pitches will be on display irrespective of when you play the matches in England
it's more of a lost generation kind of deal; a complete failure to turn the talented batsmen of the bairstow/buttler generation into competent test batsmen. no way in hell should a team as resourced as england's be relying on the likes of burns and sibley

I don’t think Root has done a lot wrong as skipper. It doesn’t matter how good you are as a leader, you can’t defend sub 200 scores consistently.
Pull the other one. He bowled Leach around the wicket to lefties into the pads with free runs everywhere, on a greentop, when the game was in the balance

Don’t agree with this. Data is incredibly valuable in anything if you use it correctly.

If doing a lot of heavy lifting there though
Fair enough. Data is invaluable for sure (looking at video footage, tracking fitness and nutrition etc) and is multi-faceted, but I think England should keep it low-key and stop mentioning it so publicly. You'll only look foolish when you can't perform up to perceived expectations. Buttler and Bairstow being two examples

picking bairstow is clearly an example of them not using data

Yeah that’s a dud decision for sure. But at the end of the day they don’t make enough runs. That’s the underlying issue for them

what root did at lords in the 3rd innings against bumrah and shami with the game in england's lap - and probably, hence, the series - was quite possibly the worst captaincy i've ever seen with my own eyes (or, like, on a screen). he genuinely lost them that game through his captaincy and that's no mean feat.

The England team saving the Victorian crowd from a serious case of Covid by letting them go early, THANK YOU England, very noble of you.

Basically we haven’t debuted a decent Test match specialist bat since late 2012. The cracks were covered over for a good few years but really since Cook went we’ve been exposed, and all the moreso with Stokes miles down on his prior self.

Amazing that we won in Sri Lanka and actually won a Test in India but that was down to Root in imperious form + we do still have good bowlers.

I remember in the days when we were debating Ashley Giles V Monty Panesar and Geraint Jones V Chris Read some of the reasoning for Giles and Jones was that otherwise we were faced with 5 out all out. What a time to be alive that was as it’s now Root out all out.

I mean theoretically you're right - I'd imagine Root being a close friend and county teammate helps him stay in the team . But my perception is that Silverwood and the other coaches will see Bairstow's white-ball success and high average (data) and think he can successfully transfer that across to the red-ball game

That is totally illogical imo

It's a salient point but patently false... Something something untenable

Yeah I think Bairstow will stick around, especially because he put up the sort of score in the first innings that keeps you in the side and will argue he was incredibly unlucky to be given in the second
