I personally would be wary of comparing Shardul and Deepak now to 2018 Bhuvi and Hardik (who we both played in the one Test we won then at Johannesburg). I mean how good is Deepak anyway in red ball cricket?
Took 9 wkts once iirc . One of the best swing bowlers from IND.

Deepak Chahar has the ability to swing the ball but not sure he is a red ball option. Has been mediocre in ODIs so far. Leaks far too many runs sometimes. Shardul as a batsman or a bowler is cut above him.
Saini was outstanding on A tour & was bowling with serious pace & bounce. Looked like he Finally found his mojo back.

Jesus christ the SA batting is going to be thin. India will know ultimate disgrace if they don't carve this collection of duds up.

I wonder how many tens of runs Bavuma will score this series.

Yeah, no excuse to not take this series. Will be disappointed with anything less than a 2-0 scoreline; certainly don't want to be dropping a Test. Yes, hapless middle-order and all, but have a feeling at least one of three will enjoy good returns.

Actually think this SA batting line up is quite decent. Markram is a stud, Elgar is quite often a pest to opposition teams - always gets stuck in. VDD I really rate and Mulder is a major talent ready to fully showcase his capabilities imo

Definitely think India are favourites but wouldn't surprise me in the least to see SA rack up some good totals. Abundance of talent in that top 7

No world class consistent players in top 7 for us besides Quinton and arguably elgar, vdd is steady so far ,makram starting to produce, the other 3 at the momentum petersen, mulder, bavuma haven't produced the goods yet, arguably bavuma at 5 or 6 plays well to graft a score when we in trouble.

India have definite edge in terms of bowling I think but seriously our batting looks grim. SA have better batsman for these conditions & I felt Gill would have been amazing for us this tour coz he was really suited to these bouncy surfaces.. Terrible that he isn't here & neither Rohit.
Basically Indian batting in last year or so has relied heavily on Openers & lower order bailing them out overseas or even in India. That middle order is just as poor as it comes. Hopefully Iyer or Vihari can somehow give us some runs or stability there.
This is going to be 2-1 either way. First test is the ultimate clincher.

Yeah the batting is suspect and especially so -without in form Rohit and Jadeja.
Kohli is going to have to turn back the clock and play closer to his prime for India to win. It’s going to be an incredibly low scoring series I feel.

Kohli also did well in Australia last year,he was about to score a century but so called captain specialist ran him out.

Thats where India lost the Adelaide game. India's first innings score would have easily been 350, instead of 250, being 190/3 at the time.

And then Aus was like 110/7 or 8 down, and India dropped 2-3 catches in quick succession and allowed Aus to almost double the team score to 200.

without these basic errors, India's 1st innings lead would've been 180-200 runs. Add in 36 all out and it still would have been a very competitive 4th innings target!

So it is unfair/ dumb actually to blame the captain, kohli, for the dropped catches, especially by Aggarwal and for Rahane running Kohli out on 74 and kick starting a collapse out of nowhere.

Basically India didn't lose because of Kohli. It was Rahane and Aggarwal directly responsible for the defeat when India could have been so ahead in the game. I am glad Rahane made up for it in Melbourne.

Looks like day 2 could be a washout. And there might be some rain on Day 1 and Day 5 as well.
Hopefully pitch is spicy enough to allow a result in upto 3.5 days of play.

That settles it We should go with 4 bowlers. 3 in form pacers + 1 spinner. No use of 5 bowlers in a curtailed short game like we found in WTC final. No Rahane as well

honestbharani

Whatever it takes!!!
The issue with 6 batters is that you know ****ing Rahane will be one of them. All 3 of Pujara, Rahane, Vihari plus the current Virat will be much of a muchness in the middle order.

Ideally it is Shreyas at 6 and Vihari at 5. And if Pujara fails here as well, move Vihari to 3 next test and bring in Lord. Lets see.

While run outs & collapses are part of the game but yes in hindsight those dropped catches really hurt India in that D/N game. We were marginally ahead in the game. Paine was playing a rare clutch inns. Even though Aussie tail is no pushover but we should have got a handy lead. I still expected Australia to win that game considering 36AO as Adelaide usually flattens out later on but who knows.
Tbh I always consider Christchurch 2020 as bigger missed opportunity than Adelaide D/N test. We really had NZ on the ropes in that 2nd inns there.

I am not convinced by any of the three to be honest- Vihari, Iyer nor Rahane.

Not expecting anything from Mayank either. Have a bit of hope of some runs from Rahul and some resistance by Pujara in terms of balls faced and time, though not a lot of runs. But I am expecting some runs from Kohli because he ought to be super fired up after the captaincy sack. Then it’s going to be upto the lower order to fluke some runs at the end to reach 200-250. Overall, not good.

Yeah not sold at all on our batting. There's no one in domestic cricket scoring a whole lot as well. Mayank & Vihari were domestic bullies & find themselves in the squad. Not sure what Panchal did to suddenly get over Easwaran in pecking order who is far younger & more consistent.
This is the best we got.. Except maybe Gill who is a big big miss. This tour was just ideal for him. Rohit has been our in form player & he is out. Someone has to surprise us & I am expecting Iyer to provide some fire works this time. He is severe on cut & back foot punch so that should suit him. Also Maharaj should be carted around with no mercy by Pant & Iyer. You can't let a spinner bowl economically here.
