England’s problem is batting not bowling

Slip fielding as well

Bairstow for Burns?

Suck it up ranga & open

Forget about a spinner and get Root to bowl a few
Root has 40 wickets at 44
Bess 36 wickets at 34
Leach 63 wickets at 31

Would also go with Root.

Based on my above posted theory -

Overton to come into the team based on being 6 foot 5
Stuart Broad to also come into the team also based on being 6 foot 5
Didn't we try this four years ago? Or maybe the time before that. These series merge into one nowadays. Don't get me wrong, Broad should have played here and I hope he plays in the next one. Less convinced that Overton should play because of his height

Hameed with his scores of 27 and 25 did relatively well as low as that bar was for England this match.
Real old school opener with a career SR after 7 tests of 33.

Pope keeping up his 1st innings/2nd innings disparity. 1st team innings average of 43, 2nd team innings of 14.

Looking more and more likely that he will be this generations Hick or Ramprakash. Outstanding county record, mediocre test record.

wtf I don't know how bad the overrate was but it must have been world record levels of bad to justify that
I don't care about over rates at all usually and I thought it was ridiculously slow on Day 2

I rate Pope and thought he looked pretty good in the first dig but he's going to give Lyon a fair few wickets if he's going to bat like that against spin.

The WTC table says 7 penalty overs. They were 14 overs short on day 2 but there were plenty of delays, so that seems about right, htogh they might have made some time up on day 3. It was catastrophically bad, especially when you remember that although a day is 'technically' 6 hours there's a free extra half hour. They bowled only 12 overs an hour on day 2.

Pope looked heaps better against spin in this Test than he did in England but yeah Lyon's going to get him out most innings anyway IMO. He's actually quite good when he uses his feet and tries to get to the pitch but it's totally against his instincts; he seems to need to consciously force himself to do it, so when he has concentration lapses he gets stuck on the crease.

Ian Bell was the same in the first half of his career against Warne and Ajmal too.

It's probably an unfortunate side effect of there being barely any competent spin at county level for a few years now, he can compile an excellent record and develop his game without ever having to really learn how to play it.

Way too early to say that about Pope.

Actually think he is a top notch talent along with hameed. They are two of the most promising batsmen in the world.. Have to persist with him as young batsmen take time to mature.
