2021 English Cricket Season

There's a good reason why cricket doesn't start at Lords at 10:30am even during the summer. Heading towards October it's insane. 12 for 6 is about par for the first hour.

its bonkers. ECB need to look at the formats and calendars for 2022. No issue with 1 day matches at this time but not 4-5 day games

Bob Willis will be looking down having a good giggle at this. In his last Lords final for Warwickshire in the mid 80’s they batted first and were bowled out for 130 odd and he had a good rant at the authorities for the 10:30 start and the toss deciding the match. In those days it was a 60 over final and in September the daylight was limited and there were no lights. What didn’t really make sense was the 55 over final was played in July when there were two hours extra daylight. If Bob had been there on the opening day here 12 for 6 would probably have been even worse.

Back to a two division County Championship next year Kent are somehow in Division 1.
As we should be, Surrey lucky to be there after a dismal season, Notts & Durham would feel agrieved, but pleased for Glos & Northants who got promoted in 2019, they now have a chance to show what they can do, although Northants likely favourites for the drop.

https://www.essexcricket.org.uk/2021/10/27/matt-critchley-joins-essex-county-cricket-club/ Critchley to Essex.

Good move for Essex no doubt. Makes a very strong side even stronger. Ali Cook will probably sign on for another year now that Irani is gone from his role as chairman of the cricket committee.

Not as convinced that it is the best move for Critchley. The advantage of being at a weak side like Derbyshire is you get to bowl plenty of overs and bat high up. With Harmer at Essex it's hard to see Critchley bowling the overs he has had Derbyshire. That being said hopefully it will help him bring his game to a higher level. No England lions as yet.

Yes this is an excellent signing partly because he is a very good county player who hasn't been on England's radar, he will contribute a lot and not be taken away. Livingstone, Parkinson, Rashid have the spot he could take unless he suddenly jumps up another level.

stuart law gone from middlesex. there has been a number of promising youngsters blooded in his time but not surprised by this as the results have been piss poor.

afridi is an interesting signing but a seamer should be fairly low on the priority list there given they already have murtagh, bamber, cullen, trj and helm on the books. handscomb still not confirmed he is coming back for his second year by the looks of it. bloke is ****ing awful in english conditions.

Let's move discussion of the YCCC's massive institutional racism to the dedicated thread now

EDIT: I've moved all the related posts from the last few days to that thread

I notice Duanne Olivier is back in the SA test squad. When you see him go back to SA and dominate the fc game there and you contrast that with his performances for Yorkshire and I do wonder what conclusions to take from it.

2019 and 2021 stats for Yorkshire. https://stats.espncricinfo.com/ci/e..._team.html?id=12758;team=1515;type=tournament https://stats.espncricinfo.com/ci/e..._team.html?id=12758;team=1515;type=tournament

Of the 11 wickettakers for Yorkshire in the champioship this year only Root (who took 1 wicket) had a worse average that Olivier. In 2019 he also had the worst average of those with 10 wickets or more.

I guess Olivier may be a bit of a one trick pony that relies on pace and bounce. Still it's a worry for the English game that Olivier can be so devastating in test cricket, and yet in English conditions it would seem you are better off being the medium pacer like Patterson or Coad bowling in the 70s mph. Certainly for away series England are going to continue to struggle to produce good quick bowlers given it's much easier (both on the body and statistically) to be a medium pacer in the English game. Maybe at home England should be a bit more open to trying some of these medium pacers instead of someone like Mark Wood. It would be interesting to see someone like Ben Coad or Sam Cook given a go at home when conditions are in their favour.

Olivier just didn't play well for Yorkshire I think. Morkel had a lot of success at surrey
Morkel was great in his first season with Surrey, but his figures tailed off enormously in his second one. That may just be due to his age kicking in, as he wasn't a young man by then.

Might not have any test batsman but a lot of English batsman continuing to prosper in overseas leagues. In recent days had Laurie Evans mom in Big Bash final, 20 year old Will Smeed making 97 in PSL, Will Jacks making 52 off 19 balls in the BPL. Those just the standouts. Also obviously had Banton and Salt doing well in the last T20i, and Bethell making 88 in 42 balls for England u19s.

Could do with a few more bowlers prospering. I wonder whether Jake Lintott and his left arm leg spin will be an option at some point for England in T20. Just starting to get more opportunities. Currently playing in BanglPL, before that was at the CPL.
