Just had a look at England's lineup. More unknown Anglo names than the first boat that came from England to Aus.

Nice of England to have the game reach a conclusion in the half-hour between the first ball and me going to bed.

What an enjoyable (1/2) day at the cricket. I found out what the 'premium' cost of our ticket was - the seats had cushioning on them. Your arse still goes to sleep after an hour, but oh what a joyous hour it is. I had to leave at 1:20 to go to my son's Prep celebration thingy, and thus missed everything after that point. I was intending on heading back at 3, and then it pissed down from a great height. I mean, sure, I might have missed the last 5 wickets and essentially paid $125 to be at the cricket for 3 hours, but the 3 mini chocolate cupcakes and the Middle Eastern vegetables and rice I got a the school soiree more than made up for it.

Jeez I think they missed a trick not playing at least one of Anderson or broad. He may have bowled first had he had one available.
Then again if you’re rolled for 150 it’s tough no matter who’s in the attack

It reeks to me of overplanning before they arrived. Without having a look at the pitch, and factoring in that they wanted to rotate their quicks across the series, it might have made sense to think something like "Brisbane looks a bit green sometimes but don't be fooled, it'll be a bouncy road - try to bat first, see off the first session and then apply scoreboard pressure. Save Jimmy and Broad for the pink ball Test."

But the tactic should have come under serious reconsideration once they saw the actual pitch.

In saying all that, I still don't think it did all that much. If they'd have got through the first session without losing Root or Stokes it still could have worked exactly as I said tbh.

England aren't out of this. Wicket would be spiced up tommo and bit quicker aswell. Wood is pointless but both Woakes and Robinson can get amongst them. 3rd and 4th days have a much better forecast

agree tbh; it felt as if a lot of the movement was through the air, not off the wicket, and that a couple of the wickets were on some pretty dicey batsmanship from some clearly in over their heads bats

I thought the opposite actually, there was a bit of seam but pretty substantial extra bounce, but the ball did absolutely nothing in the air.

Tbh a lot of the dismissals were classic "haven't had enough practice on bouncy Australian pitches" dismissals. Tentative footwork, pushing with the hands etc.

Apparently Anderson was right on the line fitness-wise; fair enough if so. But leaving out Broad on this pitch is absolutely bonkers.

Yeah plenty bounce. Broad would have loved bowling on it

Interested to see how our attack goes on this pitch if it offers a similar amount as the start of our innings, not that it was excessive but offered enough.

All of them have to be bang on it, I like Wood offering some serious pace as an option and Robinson should in theory go well here. It lacks the elite level without Broad and/or Anderson, the unit have to turn up collectively to stop this Test being out of reach by the end of day two.
