Is Ashwin an ATG spinner / player?

Ashwin is probably one test away from being the fourth highest ranked wicket taker as a spinner in just 82 tests.

his average is well below 25 and he has a major contribution to India’s greatest ever series victory.

Would you consider him an ATG spinner?

is he India’s greatest spinner. There was a thread a few years ago that put him behind the likes of Gupte and Bedi?

If you ask me, amongst spinners he is India’s best by some margin (and I love Jumbo) and in the mix for top seven of all time. Behind Warne, Murali and Grimmett but competing with Underwood, O’Reilly, Verity for the top seven spots and ahead of Herath, Kumble, Gibbs, Bedi, Gupta etc.

In terms of overall value, his batting may put him up there with the greatest.

Those two names imo, should be swapped. Otherwise yeah, Ashwin is an atg player/spinner. Missing the Murali/Warne level because he wasn't too good away to the good/decent teams of his time: http://howstat.com/cricket/statistics/players/PlayerCountries.asp?PlayerID=3788#bowl

He tricked Paine into sledging him about going to Brisbane. Ashwin pretty much won the Gabba test single-handedly without even playing.
That series wasnt really an upset to anyone who had being paying attention to Indias bowling attack and Aus batting.

Most statisfying victory, maybe... debatably. But it is well down on greatest Indian victories.

No.

He gets hidden in SENA because he isn't good enough to make the team, and the results support the decision.

His England record is good, his Australian one is bad, and while you could argue his sample size of four tests in NZ and SA (two of the strongest sides India face and definitely up there in harsh tours) is not fair, there's a reason he has been dropped in favour of Jadeja in those games.

Ashwin is firmly an ATVG. You can let him loose in the right place and he will make your team near unbeatable, but outside of those circumstances he struggles to be a test standard bowler.

Jadeja is the better bowler, better batsman and obviously better fielder plus he's a lot more fun and less of a whiner so this isn't much of a contest tbh.

I don't mind horses for courses as much as perhaps the mainstream does but I still think to be truly great you need to be useful in most conditions.

Would argue in the last two series he was better than Murali ever was in Australia (or any other touring spinner I can recall)
With all due respect though, Murali was facing arguably the greatest batting lineup of all times. In 2007 for example he was still facing: Hayden, Ponting, Hussey, Clarke, Gilchrist etc. Of course, you can only play who's put infront of you. But one player faced an atg lineup, while the other a very good one.

Murali also played 5 tests there spread out amongst a long career, half of Ashwin's opportunities.

Murali also played every game he was fit for.
