Maybe, maybe not.
Firstly congratulations to Ajaz Patel, a tremendous achievement, a day of cricket where everyone that likes
cricket will remember forever. Remarkably, despite the 10 wicket haul, he could go down at this stage
in history as being on the wrong end of one of the largest test losses of all time.
Not sure what the records are, but currently at stumps on day 2, it's very conceivable India could win by a margin
of 650-700, and possibly much more pending when Virat decides to pull the pin.
The reference was mainly to the series played this year in India, (February)where they hosted England for 4 tests.
Unfortunately the pitches there were like apple crumble over baked in the oven, with no cream or ice cream
to moisten the effect. From memory the ball spat and spun, kept low and basically didn't come on well.
The dust that would come up as each ball was bowled was a sight to behold, and the game was soon over.
England averaged 144 in their last 7 innings, scoring 178 134 164 112 81 205 135.

Well we have a few spare days off again, so we could start with a pint and perhaps some more golf.
For the true cricket enthusiast, do you really want to see this unfolding?
Is test cricket not the kind of game you like to see where late on day 5 all 4 results are possible, everyone is on
edge biting their fingernails, the outcome on a knifes edge. For example India against Australia less than a year ago.
Even in the first test of this series, on a supposedly decent track, so many balls kept too low.
Some batsman got out to them, many survived, but surely there were far too many of them.
Are grubbers a good thing to be a part of in test cricket?
For me it's no to playing tests in India, much more attractive would be more tours to England or Australia.
Virat have mercy on the blackcaps, as they head towards the record books in more than one way.

If your main criticism is that games should last more than 4 days then you should have been pretty happy after the first one.
And this test ending in a jiffy is 100% on NZ, India had a very respectable 1st innings score and will probably do an encore in the second.

India were bowled out for 36 just less than a year ago in the micky mouse pink ball test.
Blackcaps almost doubled it!!

If Wagner had played in the last game, NZ might have been chasing 180-200 instead of 280.
And if he had played in this game, India may have got around 225-250 instead of 325 and it would have been game on.
honestly felt at the time that 300+ in the first innings took the game away from nz.
But then Ajaz may have only got like 7 wickets and not 10. But I'd rather take that & compete than take 10-fer and be completely out of the game.
Wagner non-selection has to be the dumbest selection call of the series. How do you make the same mistake TWICE?!

The difference is that India won that series 2-1.
Since 2012:
India winning the toss: 19 (excluding this Test) games, of which 16 have been won and 3 draws.
India losing the toss: 20 games, of which 15 are wins, 2 losses and 3 draws.
I don't think pitch talk really matters that much when we can win or draw games 37/39 times in home conditions.

Last time NZ were in Australia, none of the matches went to the 5th day so you should probably stick to England and New Zealand.
He averages 40 in India and the UAE.

You saw what Southee and Kyle did in the last game? Imagine Wagner there too. India being 50-5 in 2nd innings would have been 150 all out. The two seamers simply ran out of company with spinners being of no help then. Wagner would have rattled at least a few of the newer indian batsmen.
Sommerville has been nothing but a total liability with the ball. At least Wagner would have complemented the pace attack and helped build pressure to induce wickets.

Somerville batted the whole 1st session on day 5 & saved NZ somewhat. Kinda evened out in the end.
But no reason to pick him in 2nd test over Wagner.
Wagner should have been picked in Kanpur with the benefit of hindsight. But the stats show that it wasn't a mistake, not picking him before the start of the test.

Yes but Nz wouldn't have needed all that saving the game if the target was 180 instead of 280.
Draw wouldn't have been a possible result. Either win or lose.

40 per wicket would have been just fine. Somerville and Ravindra got 0/143 between them, so 3-4 wickets would
have made a huge difference. More to the point he would have annoyed the **** out of the batsman, as he always does,
and thus often leading to a wicket at the other end. It was a no brainer he should have played, costly selection mistake.
You may even ask yourself what was he even doing there in the first place if he wasn't going to play?

New Zealand would have won had Wagner been picked.
But picking three seamers in India typically leaves the offending teams looking like absolute fools. Re: England. So its understandable why that decision was made in the circumstances.

You could play cricket anywhere but you need bats and especially balls.
