And in a Test setting Procter with 7 tests does not really warrant discussion. Though he is one of my favourite players of all time.We talk about hypothetical test XIs.

Sure take that to the ATG thread. Here we’re comparing two bowlers who had full test careers. Procter does not come into it.Hypothetical test discussion can be based on other formats of the game.
Because almost everyone rates Procter as An ATG quality bowler and a match winning batsman better than Botham or Kapil. But what are you realistically basing this on?

Steyn was really good at cleaning up the tail from what I can remember. As for the 2011 game, aust were comfortable at 2 for 150 or something then lost their way. I won't really blame SteynThere is one area where Imran is comfortably better than Steyn and that is in bowling yorkers.
Steyn never really bowled yorkers in test cricket and there have been instances where struggled to clear the tail. The 2nd test when Australia toured South Africa in 2011 comes to mind, Aus chased down 300+ score with Cummins and Johnson.
Steyn had a phase in his career when he really sucked in 4th innings for some reason.Steyn was really good at cleaning up the tail from what I can remember. As for the 2011 game, aust were comfortable at 2 for 150 or something then lost their way. I won't really blame Steyn
DefinitelyStill maintain that Steyn is being overrated somewhat in this forum.
That thread is from 2009. A thread from 79 about Imran would be titled ''Is Imran the worst ever 15th best fast bowler in the world''.Still maintain that Steyn is being overrated somewhat in this forum. I think as a matchwinner he was really impressive but more flawed than your average ATG.
Certainly had more doubters here of him in the beginning.
Is Dale Steyn the worst ever best fast bowler in the world?
When was the last time we had such an 'ordinary' (comparatively of course) best fast bowler? It's pretty clear he is the best and no one would dispute he's a superb player but is he only the best because of the lack of great bowlers going around currently? Compared to others in recent times he...www.cricketweb.net
I have read somewhere Thilan Samaraweera in A tours average 50 with the bat and low 30s with the ball. Proper spin bowling all rounder going on those stats. But, then we know how it turned out at the test level. FC stats and peer ratings are not a good way to judge test success. It is not that difficult to maul the county sides. Sangakkara averaged above to 100, even after his retirement. Murali average 15.6 even by playing in early season. Above two can be said ATG players, but even de Silva who was agood batsman but not ATG, while playing for Kent averaged like Bradman.Because almost everyone rates Procter as An ATG quality bowler and a match winning batsman better than Botham or Kapil.
All the evidences available suggests the same. A gun fielder too. We dont have such a great combination in the last 100 years ( except Sobers )
And even if his performance declines in international matches by... Say 20%... He is still a true great with Bowling and Batting in the class of Kapil Dev. Imagine that.
Procter is a Guaranteed ATG unlike Barry Richards.
When I was a kid I thought scoring 2000 runs a season averaging 80 was normal in county cricket because every state batsman from Australia went over there and did itI have read somewhere Thilan Samaraweera in A tours average 50 with the bat and low 30s with the ball. Procter played 16 matches against Strong test teams in a span of 10 years and averaged 30+ with bat and less than 20 with ball.I have read somewhere Thilan Samaraweera in A tours average 50 with the bat and low 30s with the ball. Given Proctor's different action, it could be said it is Novelty that hasn't had chance to wear off.Procter played 16 matches against Strong test teams in a span of 10 years and averaged 30+ with bat and less than 20 with ball.
Had Murali retired after playing 16 tests, this would have been a perfect analysis.Given Proctor's different action, it could be said it is Novelty that hasn't had chance to wear off.
Bad analogy. Proctor didn't develop anything even close to being significant as a doosra during his mid career.Had Murali retired after playing 16 tests, this would have been a perfect analysis.
But he didn't.. So you can post this without any concern.
