I don't get the obsession with medium pacers who aren't going to take wickets. I like daryl mitchell but he shouldn't play this series.

Hmm would prefer he became the best batsman he can be tbh. There's a 40+ averaging test batsman in there, and he isn't there yet.
Is there?

I don't really follow domestic cricket but he hasn't looked like much from what I've seen in limited overs cricket.

Chapman superior IMO

I mean I would prefer this of Rachin. At some point he & NZ cricket need to decide if he's an opener who can provide some part time spin relief much in the same way Kane used to, or if he's going to be batting 6/7, first choice spinner at home/England to allow 4 seamers, and 2nd choice spinner in other overseas tours.

If the latter, I see him averaging sub 35 with the bat and plus 35 with the ball - and that'd be a waste imo.

Yeah, NZ might feel the bite of Lord Colin's decline in this series imo. He was such a great player to have on a tour of Asia, in spite of his noted weakness against spin. Genuine wicket taker for the first 10-15 overs, effective container for while the other bowlers need a rest, and handy for slogging some cheap runs down the order. Perfect for balancing out a Southee/Boult + Wagner + 2 spinners attack.

Three seamers, Ajaz and or Phillps/Ravindra. Santner is unplayable as a test match bowler and he isn’t near those two with the bat.
Yeah I've finally decided this is the best option. Strongest batting option which is needed (Wagner is more likely to smash 30 than Somerville block to 30) and Somerville hasn't bowled in 1st class cricket since about March.

Stead all but confirmed three twirlers last week though. Even though it's an unfair ask on Somerville to bowl his first ball since last season in India, he's in the top three options. Ajaz, Somerville, Ravindra.

Just you wait until they announce Patel, Santner and Phillips.

The selection options are reaching crescendo. Good problem to have I guess.

Imagine a line up like

Young
Latham
Kane
Ross
Nicholls
Rachin
Blundell
Santner
Kyle
Southee/Wagner
Ajaz

All in the top 7 capable of scoring hundies. no.8 to no.10 good enough to score 20-30 runs. Leaves only one bunny in Ajaz with the bat but his bowling balances that. If we last long enough, there will be a new ball and both Rachin and Tom will be more than happy to face the pacers with the new ball. One a proper opener and another has opened for black caps for reasonable time.

Why do I feel they will sacrifice Sommerville for Santner. I'm now more than certain they will debut Rachin. Saw some more training videos he looks in good touch with the bat and ball. Young had padded up with Latham, Kane and Ross first up suggests he'll be playing. Also Santner batting. Looks very likely Young, Rachin and Santner will be playing.

Didn't see Phillips or Darryl padded up so safe to suggest they're not going to be playing.

Welcome to green park... not so green today. There are cracks already visible on the pitch. I'd take 5 spinners thanks.
