... Glanced back at some old scorecards, all-rounders like K Mills, M Orchard, J Yovich, N McCullum, Devcich, M Hart often batted at 6 or even higher. Some of this is genuine improvement of bowlers' batting skills, but some of it was surely robbing younger batters of a chance, to fit in more bowlers for what reason? ...

Sometimes their bowling became less effective (IIRC Yovich lost a yard of pace, Matthew Hart got the yips) so to maintain a spot in the playing XI they needed to bat in the top 6.

For others I think (Mills, NMc) it was more about having 5 bowling options, and they were good enough to bat #6 in domestic FC.

Greenwood’s runout was an interesting one. Played the ball back to the bowler and held his pose. Wheeler noticed he was out of his crease and threw down the stumps. Disappointing end to a promising innings.

I lean on the side of this being pretty poor form, but then I also think that getting run out or stumped is the inherent risk associated with batting out of your crease. Batters don't just get to pretend that the crease doesn't exist when a fast bowler is bowling.

Good to see that Nathan Smith's move between seasons so far, topping the wickets chart at an average of 15 and showing his mettle with the bat with 55 and 60* in the Firebirds current fixture.

What year was I emailing Bruce Edgar about Smith, I wonder. Just before the domestic contracts came out for 2016/17, it looks like.

Nathan Smith has always looked a good batsman. For someone coming from Oamaru with limited facilities and lack of good coaching he's quite good technically both with the ball and the bat. Definitely one of the players next in line. Few more NZ A games will help. He did quite well for NZ A vs WI and Pak last season.

He received excellent coaching in the Valley Second Grade team 2010-11. I myself coached him through an innings of 83* in company with the former coach of the North Otago XV who made a ton. As I was out early for a duck I umpired that entire innings.

Someone on Twitter saying Tim Pringle was actually selected for the 2020 U19 WC (or was on course for it). Had a bit too much of the Ben Stokes ginger rage in him to stay in that squad though, and he's getting a bit better at keeping a lid on it now.

I did wonder if the Nathan Smith signing was a threat to Jimmy Neesham's red ball spot, and well, yes.

Good to see him scoring runs. He's not especially quick or tall and I don't trust dookaburra wickets so him batting well makes me much more comfortable he can be more than a 20/40 player at test level.

His batting seems a bit overhyped to me. I can't imagine a spin bowling coach seeing a kid like that and not wanting him in the squad though.

Yes you know the region he's from. The only braggy part of NZ, lots of dairy guys. Good at tallying up the milk solids or the sheer quantity of runs one of their kids is making. Not particularly fussy beyond that.

Bowling action is quite similar to a young Vettori tbf. Maybe he'll do his back and end up a straight breaker averaging 40 with the bat at #8.
